Prompted by a question from his young daughter, Chris Rock sets out to understand what “good hair” means inside Black communities. His investigation moves through salons, barbershops, laboratories, a styling competition and the international trade in human hair, connecting everyday beauty routines with money, identity and social expectations.
Jeff Stilson directs while Rock serves as narrator, producer and co-writer, speaking with stylists, customers and public figures including Maya Angelou, Nia Long, Eve, Ice-T and Al Sharpton. The documentary uses humor as an entry point, but its most useful material comes from letting participants explain the personal costs and choices behind chemical relaxers, weaves and changing standards of beauty.
