1. The film used no CGI for the Trinity test explosion. Christopher Nolan and his team recreated the world's first nuclear detonation practically, using a combination of miniatures, pyrotechnics, and chemical reactions. Nolan has long preferred practical effects, and this sequence is considered one of the most technically ambitious in-camera effects ever put on film.
2. Cillian Murphy lost significant weight for the role. J. Robert Oppenheimer was famously gaunt during the Manhattan Project years, and Murphy committed to the physical transformation, reportedly surviving on little more than almonds and a single piece of tuna a day during production.
3. It was the highest-grossing World War II–era film ever made. Oppenheimer grossed over $952 million worldwide, surpassing Saving Private Ryan and Dunkirk to become the highest-grossing film set during the WWII period in cinema history.
4. The IMAX sequences were filmed with a custom-modified camera. Nolan shot portions of Oppenheimer on large-format 70mm IMAX film — including the Trinity test sequence — using specially modified cameras capable of capturing black-and-white IMAX footage, a first in the format's history.
5. Robert Downey Jr. underwent a dramatic transformation. To play Lewis Strauss, the politically ambitious chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, Downey Jr. wore prosthetic ears and a nose and adopted a completely different physicality — earning him his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
6. The script was written in first person. Christopher Nolan wrote the screenplay entirely in first person from Oppenheimer's perspective — an unusual technique that helped the cast and crew remain anchored in the protagonist's subjective experience throughout production.
7. "Barbenheimer" became a cultural phenomenon. Released on the same day as Barbie (July 21, 2023), the unlikely double-feature pairing sparked a global social media movement. Many cinemagoers watched both films back-to-back on opening weekend, driving record-breaking box office numbers for both films simultaneously.

Oppenheimer is a 2023 epic historical drama written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The film chronicles the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist who led the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, with an ensemble cast including Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh. It was produced and distributed by Universal Pictures.
Released on July 21, 2023 — the same day as Barbie, sparking the cultural phenomenon known as "Barbenheimer" — the film became a massive critical and commercial success, grossing over $952 million worldwide. At the 96th Academy Awards, it won seven Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (Nolan), and Best Actor (Murphy).
