Action & Adventure

From writer-director Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation), Civil War is one of the most audacious and deliberately uncomfortable films of 2024 — a near-future war thriller that refuses easy political allegiances in favor of a raw examination of what conflict does to the human spirit. The film follows Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst), a legendary war photographer numbed by years of documenting atrocities, who joins veteran journalist Joel (Wagner Moura) and two younger colleagues on a perilous road trip across a fractured United States to reach Washington, D.C., before the Western Forces close in on a besieged president.

Garland is deliberately opaque about the political specifics: we learn only that Texas and California have formed an unlikely alliance as the Western Forces, and that the president (Nick Offerman) has abolished the FBI and ordered drone strikes on American citizens. This ambiguity is intentional — Garland is less interested in the cause of the war than in the moral and psychological cost of bearing witness to it. The film's set pieces are extraordinarily intense, including a sniper standoff that has been widely cited as one of the most harrowing scenes in recent cinema, and a final White House assault that is brutal and visually stunning in equal measure.

At its heart, Civil War is about photojournalism and the ethics of documenting violence for a distant audience. Cailee Spaeny is a revelation as Jessie, a young photographer whose gradual desensitization mirrors the film's central thesis about the cost of covering war. Kirsten Dunst — delivering arguably the finest performance of her career — is both mentor and cautionary tale, a woman who has given so much to her work that she can no longer process the world except through a camera lens. It is a challenging, provocative film that does not offer comfort, but richly rewards those willing to sit with its difficult questions.

Monkey Man is a 2024 action thriller that marks the feature directorial debut of Dev Patel, who also co-wrote the screenplay and stars as the unnamed protagonist — a young man known only as Kid who ekes out a living as a masked fighter in an underground fighting circuit, selling losses for meager pay. Set in a fictional Indian city, the film draws on the Hindu myth of Hanuman, the divine monkey warrior, as a framework for a visceral revenge story about a man who survived a massacre as a child and has spent his entire adult life engineering a return to the halls of power where the killers live and thrive.

The film's first act builds its world with unusual patience — the city's class stratifications, its corrupt police structures, the spiritual community that gave Kid shelter, and the gleaming towers of the elites who destroyed his village are all rendered with specificity that makes the violence to come feel earned. When Kid infiltrates the hotel where his targets operate, the film shifts into a propulsive action mode that draws clear comparisons to John Wick while retaining a distinctly Indian cinematic sensibility — the choreography borrows from kalaripayattu and kushti wrestling as much as from Hong Kong martial arts cinema, and the production design keeps the mythology always visible beneath the genre surface.

Monkey Man had a complicated production history: originally acquired by Netflix, the streaming service passed on the finished film, leading Universal Pictures to pick it up for theatrical release, where it exceeded box office expectations and earned widespread critical praise for Patel's ambition and the film's emotional conviction. Dev Patel became only the second person of Indian heritage to direct a wide-release Hollywood action film, and Monkey Man's success opened conversations about representation in the action genre that continued well past its theatrical run. The film streams on Peacock.

Napoleon is Ridley Scott's grand, irreverent, and deliberately provocative biography of France's most consequential military and political figure, played with idiosyncratic intensity by Joaquin Phoenix. The film chronicles Napoleon Bonaparte's rise from a relatively obscure Corsican artillery officer to Emperor of France, his campaigns across Europe, and his obsessive, mercurial relationship with Joséphine de Beauharnais (Vanessa Kirby) — the woman whose influence over him rivaled even his own ambition. Scott approaches the subject not with reverence but with a destabilizing bluntness, presenting Napoleon as a man of exceptional tactical intelligence married to crippling emotional neediness.

The film's spectacular battle sequences — Toulon, Austerlitz, Waterloo — are staged with Scott's characteristic sweep and visceral precision, finding the chaos and carnage of Napoleonic warfare in a way that makes the glory almost inseparable from the butchery. Joaquin Phoenix refuses to play Napoleon as a legend: this is a man who is awkward at dinner, petulant in defeat, and capable of genuine vulnerability in the bedroom. Vanessa Kirby holds her own in every scene against Phoenix, giving Joséphine a layered intelligence that makes her the film's most compelling character.

Napoleon is not a careful, consensus-seeking portrait of its subject — Scott freely acknowledges his willingness to sacrifice historical accuracy to serve the film's emotional and dramatic logic, and the result is something more vivid and alive than many more dutiful biopics. The film is available to stream on Apple TV+ after its theatrical release, and an extended director's cut running over four hours brings additional scenes and a deeper portrait of the marriage.

George Miller's Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the most ambitious entry in the post-apocalyptic franchise since Mad Max: Fury Road redefined action cinema in 2015. Spanning decades in the life of a warrior who would become one of film's great action heroes, the prequel traces Furiosa's origin from her childhood in the Green Place to her brutal apprenticeship under the warlord Dementus, played with scene-obliterating menace by Chris Hemsworth. This is myth-making on a grand scale, and Miller approaches every frame with the confidence of an artist utterly in command of his craft.

Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the role made iconic by Charlize Theron, and her performance is a revelation — physical, ferocious, and simmering with a grief that slowly calcifies into iron purpose. The film wisely uses silence and restraint as counterweights to its operatic action, giving Taylor-Joy room to convey Furiosa's evolution entirely through expression and physicality. Chris Hemsworth, meanwhile, is unrecognizable beneath layers of prosthetics and a performance that swings between charming and genuinely terrifying.

The action sequences, designed with Miller's signature combination of practical ingenuity and controlled chaos, are among the finest in recent Hollywood history. The centerpiece sequence alone justifies the price of admission, but Furiosa earns its true power in the quieter moments between battles — in the long looks, the stolen memories, and the slow accumulation of loss that makes the eventual warrior Furiosa an inevitable and heartbreaking outcome. It is, without question, one of the decade's most extraordinary studio films.

Based on the beloved 1980s television series, The Fall Guy is a high-octane tribute to the unsung heroes of Hollywood: the stunt performers. Ryan Gosling stars as Colt Seavers, a veteran stuntman pulled back into the industry when a major movie star goes missing on the set of a blockbuster production in Australia. Directed by David Leitch, himself a former stuntman, the film is a love letter to the craft that makes cinema's most spectacular moments possible.

Emily Blunt co-stars as Jody Moreno, the film's director and Colt's ex-girlfriend, whose production is thrown into chaos by the disappearance. As Colt investigates, he uncovers a conspiracy involving crime bosses and a desperate cover-up that could derail the entire production. The film balances big action setpieces with sharp comedy, delivering some of the most inventive stunt work seen on screen in years.

The Fall Guy is a crowd-pleasing action-comedy with genuine heart, celebrating the adrenaline and sacrifice behind cinema's biggest thrills. It features a record-breaking cannon roll stunt performed live on camera and a soundtrack perfectly calibrated for maximum cinematic fun, earning devoted audiences globally.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning brings Ethan Hunt's legendary career to a thunderous close as he faces the most dangerous mission of his life. The rogue AI known as the Entity has gone fully operational, threatening to seize control of the world's military and intelligence infrastructure, and only the IMF team stands between humanity and total subjugation. With his cover blown and every government on earth hunting him, Ethan must assemble his most trusted allies for a final, all-or-nothing operation spanning multiple continents.

Director Christopher McQuarrie returns to deliver the most ambitious entry in the franchise yet, featuring death-defying practical stunts that Tom Cruise personally performed. The film interweaves storylines from the previous two chapters, bringing back familiar faces and resolving long-simmering conflicts while introducing new threats that push every team member to their limits. Locations range from the ruins of wartime Europe to the skies above the Pacific, all rendered with the series' signature kinetic energy and relentless momentum.

The Final Reckoning doubles down on the themes that have made the franchise endure for nearly three decades: loyalty, sacrifice, and the impossible choice between duty and humanity. Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, and Pom Klementieff all return for this climactic chapter, each given meaningful arcs that pay off years of storytelling. Whether you're a lifelong fan or a newcomer, this film delivers relentless action and genuine emotional stakes in equal measure.

Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 Australian post-apocalyptic action film directed by George Miller, the creator of the original Mad Max trilogy. Set in a barren desert wasteland where civilization has collapsed and brutal warlords control the last reserves of fuel and water, the film follows Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a haunted drifter captured by the sadistic tyrant Immortan Joe and used as a blood donor. Forced to accompany a war convoy into the wasteland, Max is chained to the hood of a war vehicle driven by Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a one-armed lieutenant who has smuggled Joe's enslaved wives out of his Citadel in a desperate bid for freedom.

What follows is essentially one continuous chase across the desert — a two-hour action symphony staged almost entirely in-camera using real vehicles, stuntwork, and practical explosions. George Miller shot the film primarily in the Namib Desert of Namibia after his planned Australian locations received too much rain and bloomed green rather than the required barren desolation. The film features Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron as co-leads of equal narrative weight, with Nicholas Hoult as Nux, a deluded War Boy who undergoes a quiet redemptive arc amid the operatic carnage. The film's design language — from the flame-throwing guitar player perched on a wall of speakers to the masks and vehicles of Immortan Joe's war band — is dense with internal mythology and craft.

Mad Max: Fury Road premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was released worldwide on May 15, 2015, to near-universal critical acclaim — it holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the 88th Academy Awards, the film won six Oscars: Film Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Cinematography, Sound Mixing, and Sound Editing — the most of any film that year. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest action films ever made and a landmark of practical, in-camera filmmaking in the digital effects era.
