Poker Face Season 2 continues Rian Johnson's Peacock mystery series, a loving throwback to the case-of-the-week detective shows of the 1970s. Natasha Lyonne returns as Charlie Cale, the wisecracking drifter with an uncanny, infallible knack for telling when someone is lying, a gift that keeps dragging her into murder after murder as she travels across America.
Back on the road in her battered Plymouth Barracuda, Charlie stumbles into a fresh set of standalone whodunits, each stocked with a rotating roster of guest stars. Season 2's lineup is loaded, featuring the likes of Cynthia Erivo, Awkwafina, Katie Holmes, Kumail Nanjiani, Giancarlo Esposito, John Mulaney and Melanie Lynskey, with the series' signature howcatchem structure showing the crime before Charlie unravels it.
The second season drew generally positive reviews, with critics again crediting Lyonne's magnetic lead performance and the show's inventive, star-studded standalone episodes, even as some felt the formula had grown familiar. Streaming on Peacock.
In each episode, "The Outer Limits" attempted to answer, "What is the nature of man?" Producers called their collection of stories, developed from radically different points of view but always mixing science fact with pseudo-science fiction and the occasional monster, an "anthology." Regular viewers mostly called it "deliciously creepy," indulging a natural tendency to compare it with its counter-part and sometimes rival "The Twilight Zone." Unlike Rod Serling's spine-tingling vignettes, though, "The Outer Limits" did not shy away from old-fashioned horror and raw sensation. "The Outer Limits" was as visceral as "The Twilight Zone" was cerebral. Many episodes dealt with time travel, stranding adventurers in threatening environments where their intellects and technology failed them, triggering their reversion to primitive states. Others explored the infinite possibilities for human evolution and mutation, all with emphasis on the most hideous possibilities. ABC aired "The Outer Limits" between 1963 and 1966; Showtime revived it in 1995, and the Sci-Fi Channel replayed all the episodes between 1999 and 2002. Originally adapted from a popular Dutch series, "Big Brother" puts thirteen carefully chosen strangers in a house heavily wired with cameras and microphones, capturing every word, gesture, and nuance. The producers challenge their "guests" to complete a series of physical and mental "stunts," periodically polling their feelings about who among them should go home. The one guest who stays longest goes home with half-a-million American dollars. Although "Big Brother's" novelty has faded, even the most stony-hearted and cynical critics must accord the superannuated series its props: When an online streaming service attempted a similarly contrived "residential situation," capitalizing on the industry's newest, most sophisticated audio and video technology, it faded to black in less than a month. At the other end of the scale, when MTV adapted "Big Brother's" premise for use along the New Jersey coastline, it became a cultural phenomenon, and "Snooki" became a household word. Clearly, it's not the premise but the chemistry that determines the show's fate. Therefore, credit "Big Brother" with good chemistry and agree to roll along with the momentum.
