Dune

Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 Dune adapts the first portion of Frank Herbert’s science-fiction novel as a story of inheritance, political power and survival. Paul Atreides travels with his parents to Arrakis, the desert planet that produces spice, the substance on which interstellar society depends. House Atreides has been ordered to govern Arrakis, but the assignment conceals a trap set by rival House Harkonnen. Paul must confront both the violence surrounding his family and visions suggesting that his choices could reshape the future. Timothée Chalamet plays Paul, with Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto and Zendaya as Chani. Villeneuve gives equal weight to intimate family decisions and the scale of the desert, while the film’s sound, production design and cinematography make Arrakis feel physically overwhelming. This is the opening chapter of Paul’s journey, not a complete adaptation of Herbert’s novel.
