Boots is a Netflix comedy-drama series created by Andy Parker, adapted from Greg Cope White's memoir The Pink Marine. Set in 1990, it follows a directionless young man who impulsively joins the United States Marine Corps alongside his best friend and must survive the brutal crucible of boot camp while carrying a secret about who he is. Executive produced by the legendary Norman Lear in one of his final projects, it balances raw military rigor with warmth and humor.
Miles Heizer stars as Cameron Cope, an aimless teenager with no obvious prospects who signs up largely on a whim and finds himself utterly unprepared for the punishing world of Marine training. Vera Farmiga plays his loving but overbearing mother, and Max Parker, Liam Oh, and Angus O'Brien fill out the ensemble of recruits and drill instructors who become Cameron's unlikely found family. The series mines both comedy and genuine drama from the pressure cooker of basic training and the secrets its recruits carry.
Critics responded enthusiastically, and the show earned a strong 92% Rotten Tomatoes score along with a top-ten streaming run, praised for its heart, its period specificity, and Heizer's grounded lead performance. Though Netflix ultimately did not renew it beyond its first season, Boots was widely embraced as a standout dramedy. It streams on Netflix.
Ahh! It's good to be young, sexy, beautiful, and "connected". What began as a small show about prejudice, sexuality, and substance abuse, typical issues to be dealt with in today's society, took a twist and began displaying the darker side such as irresponsible behavior and immaturity among a group of friends. Ben Lewis (Ryan Hansen from Superhero Movie, Housebroken) a bachelor who is carefree and constantly on the lookout for his kind of woman, one who meets the impossible standards he holds. Then we have famous "bromances" between Aaron and Ben that prove friendships can stand the test of time. Ben and his gal pal, Sara know how well a third party can shake up the mixture that romantic life can create. Friends with Benefits revolves around five friends with love issues. Seems they have set their standards so high they can't find the right mate so eventually have to settle for something somewhat less than they'd hoped for. But sometimes less is best and ultimately proves to be more.
Ever wonder how much an elephant is worth? Or how about massive pieces of diamond encrusted jewelry? Done in a game show format, It's Worth What? is a highly entertaining one hour show that gives us answers to just how much some pretty amazing items are valued at. Cedric the Entertainer, a highly successful, crowd pleasing, as well as award winning stand up comedian is the host and he seems to enjoy these discoveries as much as the participants, the studio audience, and us the TV viewers obviously do. American's typically love to compare costs as well as values on expensive items like that jewelry or even exotic animals and cars so being able to compare them, place a value on each, then see which is worth more is fun and educational at the same time. It's Worth What? is a product of the Merv Griffin Entertainment group which has a long list of television programming hits so it comes as no surprise that this new entry is becoming such a huge hit and is watched by millions each week. And it's fun to see contestants win big money when they successfully choose the more valuable trinket (or elephant).
From the 8th of March, 1993 until the 28th of November, 1997 a "socially awkward" yet somehow lovable duo with the unlikely names of Beavis and Butthead ruled the MTV airwaves. The pair loved heavy metal rock and roll and hailed from the fictionalized town of Highland, Texas where they grew up with no apparent adult supervision (think Charlie Brown, Lucy, and Linus). Highland High School teachers didn't quite know how to deal with the rather dim-witted pair"¦ that is when the two even bothered to attend school. This may be simply a lesson in how not to survive the teen years or perhaps a cautionary tale of how to be obnoxious and perverted while giving commentary on popular music videos. In any case those around Beavis and Butthead tend to get in harms way while the "boys" skate free. As in the time Butthead fired a rifle that resulted in hitting an airliner (a Boeing 747). With part time jobs at the local Burger World, among others, and still wearing their AC/DC t-shirts they manage to survive as they provide bawdy comments for today's reality TV shows like Teen Cribs, UFC fights, and Jersey Shore.
That may well be the title to a dream sequence by some brilliant but unqualified attorney "want to be's" who can only imagine how they could accomplish what Mike Ross has done. He bluffed his way in by convincing Harvey Specter, one of the finest lawyers in Manhattan to hire him in spite of the fact he has no law degree. Although Ross is brilliant and extremely personable he could not afford the schooling and his choices in friends and recreational drugs did not help his situation. However he can pass the bar without attending any law school simply because he has an eidetic memory. Now clean and dedicated to becoming a first rate attorney, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams from FlashForward, Raising the Bar) must prove himself to the man who put his trust in and hired him, Harvey Specter (played by Gabriel Macht from Love and Other Drugs, Middle Men). Mike Ross must convince the other attorneys he graduated from the Harvard Law school because that's the only place they hire new recruits from. And he is a fast learner who's wit and conviction works well in the court room.
The teenage years are especially painful and just downright awkward for most of us. This new teen comedy drama about surviving those high school years stars Ashley Rickards from One Tree Hill fame as Jenna Hamilton. Jenna unfortunately becomes somewhat of a celebrity when word gets out that she attempted suicide. It was merely an accident that went wrong but soon her contemporaries at school think she's somewhat of a celebrity. Jenna also tries to conceal her romance with a popular boy, faces off with a "mean girl", and has parents that just don't remember how tough it was being a teen. The program is contemporary and unique as it displays just how difficult it is to cope with life's changing aspects while going through puberty and finding romance that does more harm than good (for the first time). It's rough enough just growing up but being female besides makes life even more awkward and unpredictable.
What do most single ladies want out of life? They want a stable man who will allow them to do their "thing" and make a career that is as fulfilling as their relationships. We all want happiness and completion in our lives and these fine ladies have their own great jobs going for them, they just need the right man to complete them. Val Stokes (Stacey Dash of House Arrest, Close Quarters) wants to be a fashion mogul and owns a fashion boutique in Atlanta. April Goldberg-Jenkins (Charity Shea from Toxic, Primal Scream) who is married to Darryl for the past seven years has the desire to become an executive with A&R records, a move up from being the record label owner's assistant. But her marriage may be getting in the way. Keisha Green is played by LisaRaye McCoy (Beauty Shop, All of Us) has performed in music videos and wants romance in her life. Each of these single ladies has their own agenda regarding their love life and it's fun to watch as they try and fail then pick themselves up and try again.
Watch MTV and the iTunes for episodes of the new hit show Geordie Shore and you will see similarities to the popular Jersey Shore. For one thing the show has its own group of "party hard" individuals who live together in an upscale house, share bedrooms, and each as their own reasons to be there. The Geordie Shore show is a British based program coming from the UK and having decidedly British points of view. The filming of Geordie Shore has been stated to be bordering pornographic due to bare breasts, six packs, fights, and simulated fellatio. Each of these vain individuals have their own reasons to submit to "reality" television. Holly states she is the most realistic "fake" person there is and her size double F chest (paid for by her mom) is a testament to that. Then there is Jay who loves himself too much to get involved with a female on the Geordie Shore show. His idea of a relationship is about him and his workouts at the gym. James, who is only 20, must check himself out each time he passes a mirror. Sophie likes to flash her "boobs" while dancing on table tops. Quite an interesting group!
Marti Perkins lost her scholarship to Lancer Universities law school and finds she must get one some other way. Cheerleading can provide just the financial boost for her pre-law schooling she needs in the way of a scholarship. Along the way she befriends the team cheerleading captain (Savannah Monroe) who becomes her roommate. Vanessa Lodge (played by Sharon Leal from Dreamgirls) is the cheerleaders coach who has high hopes of winning the national championship. Gail O'Grady (NYPD Blue) is Wanda Perkins, mother of Marti and an embarrassment to her daughter quite often with behavior more expectant of a young child. Marti Perkins is played by Aly Michalka (Easy A, Bandslam), a determined young woman who is wise beyond her years and dedicated to becoming an attorney at any cost. Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical, Aliens in the Attic) is coach of the cheerleading team Savannah Monroe and when Marti comes applies to join up realizes the able young woman is just what the team needs to get into and ultimately win the cheerleading finals. This comedy drama ultimately shows how dedication and hard work will pay off big time!
Two half brothers (same father) begin their relationship by hating each other but bond and become best friends through teamwork and learning the truth about their father. Lucas Scott is played by Chad Michael Murray (House of Wax, Home of the Brave) who is recruited onto the basketball team by Coach Durham (played by Barry Corbin from Urban Cowboy & Monte Walsh). Lucas proves to be a talented player and starts out as a rival of his own half brother, Nathan Scott (James Lafferty from A Season on the Brink & Get Real). But soon the brothers learn to care for and respect each other while finding out their father Dan Scott (Paul Johansson from The Drew Carey Show & The District) is the natural father of Lucas yet he never claimed to be. As in real life, the characters on One Tree Hill have their ups and downs relationship wise and when they make mistakes they must pay for them somehow. Each season brings up more interesting reflections on family and life in high school, college, and ultimately after they have become adults proving we all need time to reflect on what we want in our lives.
The Science Channel has a hit with Through the Wormhole! It brings us answers to some pretty compelling questions we all want to know more about. And with Morgan Freeman (Academy Award winner from Driving Miss Daisy and Seven) narrating, the show is irresistible and thought provoking. While attempting to answer such questions as Is There a Creator? or Is Time Travel Possible? or Is There Life After Death? we are absolutely drawn into the possibilities these question pose. Is There actually a Sixth Sense? We know for sure of five but many speculate there is an additional sixth sense. One that gives those who have it extra advantages over the rest of us. They can, for instance, predict the future and while the human brain remains so mysterious we do know there is more we know absolutely nothing about. What do Alien Beings look like? Do they represent us or would they be totally scary in appearance? Each question creates yet more questions. Come along as Freeman explores the biggest questions and seeks answers we can appreciate and understand.
