Fire Country is a CBS firefighting drama co-created by and starring Max Thieriot, and one of the most-watched scripted series on American broadcast television. It follows Bobby Bode Donovan, a young convict who joins a prison release program that places incarcerated firefighters on the front lines of Northern California's wildfires in exchange for a shot at reducing their sentences.
Bode is assigned to work in Edgewater, his small hometown, where he must face the family and community he left behind as he fights alongside the local Cal Fire crew. The ensemble includes Kevin Alejandro, Diane Farr, Billy Burke and Jordan Calloway, and the series balances high-stakes rescue set pieces with the family melodrama and small-town tensions at its emotional core.
A breakout hit for CBS, Fire Country consistently ranks among the top-rated scripted series on American broadcast television and has spawned an expanding franchise of spin-offs. Its blend of procedural firefighting action and soapy family drama has made it a dependable ratings anchor across multiple seasons. It streams on Paramount+.
The Institute is MGM+'s adaptation of Stephen King's 2019 best-selling novel, a chilling science-fiction thriller about children whose extraordinary minds make them targets. Developed by showrunner Benjamin Cavell and executive producer Jack Bender — the team behind MGM+'s earlier King adaptation Mr. Mercedes — the series brings one of the author's most propulsive recent books to the screen with a strong pedigree in King's particular brand of small-town dread and institutional menace.
The story follows Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman), a teenage prodigy who is abducted from his home and wakes up in the Institute, a secretive facility where children with telekinetic and telepathic abilities are held and their powers systematically exploited. Mary-Louise Parker plays Ms. Sigsby, the coldly efficient administrator who runs the operation, while Ben Barnes plays Tim Jamieson, a drifting ex-cop who takes a job as a night watchman in the nearby town and becomes an unexpected thread in Luke's fight to escape. The two storylines circle each other toward a collision.
The series became a strong performer for MGM+, holding the top spot on the platform and earning a quick renewal for a second season, extending a run of successful King adaptations. Reviews praised its faithful, unsettling atmosphere and its young cast, singling out the eerie premise as a natural fit for prestige-horror television. It streams on MGM+.
Dexter: Resurrection revives television's most famous fictional serial killer, bringing Michael C. Hall back as Dexter Morgan nearly two decades after he first picked up the role. Continuing from the events of Dexter: New Blood, the series keeps Dexter alive and relocates him to New York City, where he sets out to reconnect with his estranged son Harrison (Jack Alcott). It is a full-blooded return for a character whose original run ended on a famously divisive note, and it treats that history as fuel rather than baggage.
In New York, Dexter is drawn into a shadowy underworld that gives the show its most audacious hook: an exclusive gathering of fellow serial killers, populated by a murderer's row of guest stars. Peter Dinklage plays a powerful billionaire at the center of the intrigue, Uma Thurman co-stars, and the ensemble of killers features Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, and David Dastmalchian, while David Zayas returns as Dexter's old friend Angel Batista. The premise lets the series interrogate Dexter's "code" against a whole spectrum of predators.
Critics greeted the revival as a genuine return to form, with several noting that Hall had never been sharper in the role and that the New York reinvention gave the franchise new energy. The strong reception helped wash away the mixed feelings left by earlier finales, and the series was renewed for another season. It streams on Paramount+ with Showtime.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is Prime Video's swooning coming-of-age romance based on Jenny Han's best-selling young-adult trilogy, and its third and final season turned the show into a full-blown cultural event. Lola Tung stars as Isabel "Belly" Conklin, whose summers at the idyllic beach town of Cousins have always revolved around two brothers — the brooding Conrad (Christopher Briney) and the sunny Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) — and the love triangle that has defined her adolescence. Han herself serves as showrunner and co-writer, guarding the adaptation's tone and emotional beats.
The final season leaps forward from the beach house into Belly's college years, raising the stakes from teenage summer flings to adult decisions about love, ambition, and who she wants to become. Adapting the trilogy's concluding book, the season pushes its central romance toward resolution while giving the wider ensemble of families and old wounds room to breathe. The result is a bittersweet farewell that trades some of the earlier seasons' sun-soaked innocence for genuine consequence.
Season 3 became one of the biggest streaming stories of the year, drawing tens of millions of viewers and racking up billions of minutes watched as its weekly episodes dominated social media. The passionate "Team Conrad" versus "Team Jeremiah" debate spilled far beyond the fandom, and the frenzy around the finale confirmed the show as a summer phenomenon. It streams on Prime Video.
Chief of War is a sweeping historical epic on Apple TV+ co-created by and starring Jason Momoa, who has described it as the most personal project of his career. Told largely from an Indigenous Hawaiian perspective, the series dramatizes the brutal, consequential campaign to unify the Hawaiian Islands in the late eighteenth century, a story rarely if ever given this scale on screen. Momoa, who is of Native Hawaiian descent, developed the show with Thomas Pa'a Sibbett as an act of cultural reclamation as much as entertainment.
Momoa stars as Ka'iana, a warrior chief navigating shifting alliances, foreign incursion, and the ambitions of rival rulers as the islands are pulled toward unification and, simultaneously, toward contact with a wider and more dangerous world. The series stages large-scale battles and intimate political maneuvering with equal attention, and its performances lean into the weight of a civilization at a turning point. Much of the drama unfolds in the Hawaiian language, an unusual and deliberate choice for a major streaming production.
Critics responded enthusiastically, with the series earning a strongly positive reception and comparisons to prestige epics like Game of Thrones for its ambition and craft. It stood out as one of Apple TV+'s most distinctive 2025 offerings, praised both for its spectacle and for centering an Indigenous story on its own terms. Chief of War streams on Apple TV+.
Ironheart is a Marvel Studios series that gives Riri Williams, the genius young inventor introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, her own headlining story. Dominique Thorne returns as Riri, an MIT prodigy whose gift for engineering rivals Tony Stark's, and the show was developed by Chinaka Hodge with Ryan Coogler among its executive producers. Trading Wakanda for her hometown of Chicago, the series roots its superheroics in a specific, textured world rather than a generic comic-book metropolis.
Back home and short on money, Riri builds a new suit of armor and is soon pulled into the orbit of Parker Robbins, better known as The Hood (Anthony Ramos), a charismatic criminal whose powers come from a sinister, magical source. The clash sets the series' central engine in motion: Riri's hard science against forces she cannot explain or engineer her way around, a collision of technology and the supernatural that pushes the young hero toward morally murky choices. The ensemble includes Alden Ehrenreich and a memorable AI companion drawn from Riri's own past.
The show generated its biggest conversation with a finale that formally introduced Mephisto, a demonic Marvel villain fans had theorized about for years, into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reception was mixed-to-positive, but the series was widely noted as a meaningful expansion of the MCU's roster and a showcase for Thorne's charismatic lead. It streams on Disney+.
Dept. Q is a Netflix crime drama created by Scott Frank, the writer-director behind The Queen's Gambit and Godless, adapting the best-selling Department Q novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen. In a canny twist on the Nordic-noir source material, Frank relocates the action from Copenhagen to a wintry, gothic Edinburgh, using the Scottish city's shadowed closes and grey stone as an atmospheric backdrop for a story about buried guilt and colder cases. The result is a prestige procedural with literary polish and a distinctly bleak sense of humor.
Matthew Goode stars as DCI Carl Morck, a brilliant but abrasive detective whose arrogance has alienated nearly everyone around him. After a shooting leaves one colleague dead and another paralyzed, a guilt-ridden and unwanted Morck is exiled to the basement to run Department Q, a newly created cold-case unit that is really a public-relations gesture. There, with an unlikely team including the enigmatic Akram (Alexej Manvelov), he reopens the disappearance of prosecutor Merritt Lingard (Chloe Pirrie), a case everyone else has given up on. Kelly Macdonald, Kate Dickie, and Leah Byrne round out the ensemble.
Critics embraced the series as one of the year's most satisfying crime dramas, praising Goode's prickly, against-type lead performance and Frank's patient, character-first storytelling. It became a hit for Netflix and was renewed for a second season within months of its debut, confirming appetite for more of Morck's gloomy, meticulous detective work. It streams on Netflix.
Smoke is an Apple TV+ crime thriller created by acclaimed novelist Dennis Lehane, inspired by the true-crime podcast Firebug. Dark, twisty, and psychologically dense, the nine-episode series filters a real investigation into serial arson through Lehane's signature interest in guilt, identity, and the stories people tell to survive themselves.
Taron Egerton stars as Dave Gudsen, an arson investigator and aspiring novelist who is paired with prickly detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett) to track two separate serial arsonists terrorizing the Pacific Northwest. What starts as a procedural steadily curdles into something far stranger and more personal, as the investigation circles closer to truths neither detective is prepared to confront. John Leguizamo, Rafe Spall, Anna Chlumsky, and Greg Kinnear fill out a strong supporting ensemble.
The series drew praise for its ambition, its unsettling tone, and Egerton's committed performance, along with a mid-season reveal that reframes the entire story and became one of the most-discussed television twists of the year. Anchored by Lehane's literary sensibility, Smoke is less interested in whodunit than in why — a character study disguised as a thriller.
Countdown is a propulsive action-thriller series created by Derek Haas, a veteran writer of network procedurals including the One Chicago and FBI franchises. Built for streaming momentum on Prime Video, the show trades on the ticking-clock urgency of its title while spinning out a sprawling conspiracy that keeps escalating across its thirteen-episode first season.
Jensen Ackles stars as Mark Meachum, a wisecracking LAPD officer who is recruited into a covert, multi-agency task force after a Department of Homeland Security agent is gunned down in broad daylight. What begins as a single shocking murder investigation soon reveals a far larger and more dangerous plot against the city, forcing the secretive team of operatives to race against time. Jessica Camacho, Eric Dane, Uli Latukefu, and Violett Beane co-star.
The series marks a high-profile reunion between Ackles and Prime Video following his fan-favorite run on The Boys, and it leans into large-scale Los Angeles location work and heavy stunt action to give the show a theatrical scale. Case-driven and fast-moving, Countdown was designed to hook binge viewers and deliver escalating stakes week over week.
Sirens is a darkly comic Netflix limited series created by Molly Smith Metzler, adapted from her own stage play Elemental. Unfolding over a single volatile weekend at a lavish seaside estate, the five-episode series is a sharp, stylish study of wealth, control, and the strange dynamics that bind women to the powerful people they serve.
Meghann Fahy stars as Devon, a woman who arrives at the opulent beach compound convinced that her younger sister Simone (Milly Alcock) has fallen under the cult-like influence of her glamorous socialite employer, Michaela Kell (Julianne Moore). As the weekend spirals, alliances shift and the line between rescue and delusion blurs, with Kevin Bacon rounding out the ensemble as Michaela's billionaire husband.
The series generated significant buzz for its performances — especially Moore's imperious matriarch and Fahy's live-wire outsider — and for its glossy, unsettling tone. A tight, bingeable limited run, Sirens leaned into mythic imagery to ask uncomfortable questions about caretaking, class, and who really holds the power in the relationships that money creates.
Task is an HBO limited series from writer-creator Brad Ingelsby, the acclaimed storyteller behind Mare of Easttown. Returning to the working-class landscape of suburban Philadelphia, Ingelsby delivers another slow-burning, deeply human crime drama that cares as much about the wounded people at its center as about the case that binds them together.
Mark Ruffalo stars as Tom, an FBI agent assigned to lead a task force targeting a violent string of robberies tearing through the Delaware County suburbs. Tom Pelphrey plays an unassuming family man leading a dangerous double life, and as the investigation tightens, the series draws its two damaged leads inexorably toward each other. The result is a story less about cops and criminals than about grief, faith, and the compromises ordinary people make when they run out of options.
Task drew some of the strongest reviews of the fall television season, with particular praise for Ruffalo's layered, understated performance and for Ingelsby's refusal to rush his characters. Widely received as a spiritual companion to Mare of Easttown, it confirmed the writer's gift for turning regional crime stories into rich, novelistic character studies.
