The series was adapted from Stephen King's 2019 novel by showrunner Benjamin Cavell and executive producer Jack Bender, the same creative pairing behind the earlier King adaptation Mr. Mercedes. Their prior experience translating King's work gave the project a ready-made feel for his blend of ordinary Americana and creeping horror.
Newcomer Joe Freeman — the son of actor Martin Freeman — plays the kidnapped teenage prodigy Luke Ellis in a breakout leading role. Opposite him, Mary-Louise Parker takes on the chilling Ms. Sigsby, the administrator who oversees the Institute's exploitation of its captive children with unnerving calm.

Mary-Louise Parker plays Ms. Sigsby, the coldly efficient administrator who runs the operation, while Ben Barnes plays Tim Jamieson, a drifting ex-cop who takes a job as a night watchman in the nearby town and becomes an unexpected thread in Luke's fight to escape. The two storylines circle each other toward a collision.
The series became a strong performer for MGM+, holding the top spot on the platform and earning a quick renewal for a second season, extending a run of successful King adaptations.
