Under the Banner of Heaven is a TV show based on a true crime book by Jon Krakauer. The show premiered on Hulu in April 2022 and stars Andrew Garfield and Gil Birmingham as detectives investigating a brutal murder and its potential ties to the Mormon Church. The main character, Detective Jeb Pyre, is himself a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The murder case that Detective Pyre investigates shakes his faith in the Mormon Church, as he discovers connections to the crime. Detective Bill Taba, who is not a member of the church, assists Pyre in the investigation. The show also features Adelaide Clemens as Pyre's wife and Sandra Seacat as his mother, who suffers from dementia.
Despite reigniting controversy within the Mormon faith, the series received positive reviews, with particular praise for the performances of Garfield and Russell.
