Where Minghella's version foregrounded romantic longing and visual sensuality, Zaillian's approach is colder, more elliptical, and more interested in Ripley as a philosophical study in the pathology of desire — a deliberate departure that created a genuinely distinct artistic interpretation rather than a television remake of the earlier film.

7. The Patricia Highsmith estate expressed approval of Zaillian's adaptation. The estate, which has historically been selective about approving screen adaptations of Highsmith's psychologically intricate protagonists, lent its endorsement to the project — a meaningful signal for a source material whose author was famously protective of the moral ambiguity and unsentimental intelligence that define her fiction.
