1. Podcast origins. The series is based on the Boomtown podcast by journalist Christian Wallace, who spent years embedded in the West Texas oil industry and served as co-creator of the television adaptation.
2. Billy Bob's field research. Thornton prepared for the role of Tommy Norris by spending time in the Permian Basin oil fields, speaking with actual landmen about the nuances and ethical ambiguities of their work before filming began.
3. Sheridan's Texas roots. Taylor Sheridan drew on personal memories of growing up in Texas ranch country to infuse the show with an authentic sense of place that extends well beyond the oil rigs and into the domestic lives of its characters.
4. Jon Hamm's deliberate choice. Hamm took the role of Monty Miller specifically because it allowed him to play a self-made man who is simultaneously compelling and morally compromised in ways distinct from his most famous character, Don Draper.
5. Permian Basin authenticity. The show's West Texas locations were carefully chosen to reflect the stark beauty and industrial grit of the Permian Basin, one of the most productive oil-producing regions in the world and a key driver of US energy independence.
6. Demi Moore's comeback. Moore's performance as Cami Miller received widespread critical acclaim and was credited with rejuvenating her leading television career after a long period away from prestige drama roles.
7. Record Paramount+ debut. Landman became Paramount+'s most-watched series premiere at the point of its release, drawing both Sheridan loyalists and new viewers who stayed for the show's complex, morally textured characters.
Landman is a drama series created by Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace that premiered on Paramount+ in November 2024. Billy Bob Thornton stars as Tommy Norris, the troubleshooter for a struggling Texas oil company navigating the boom-and-bust cycles, dangerous labor conditions, and moral gray zones of the modern petroleum industry. Based on the podcast Boomtown by Christian Wallace, the show digs into the lives of the roughnecks, executives, and landmen who keep the oil fields running — and the price the American West pays for its addiction to fossil fuels.
The series features a powerhouse ensemble that includes Demi Moore, Jon Hamm, Ali Larter, and Jacob Lofland. Jon Hamm plays Monty Miller, the flashy oil company owner whose fortunes are intertwined with Tommy's. Demi Moore delivers one of her most acclaimed performances in years as Monty's wife, a woman who has built a life inside a world she both loves and resents. The show balances action-heavy sequences on oil rigs with intimate family drama, creating a portrait of contemporary Texas that is by turns brutal, tender, and darkly funny.
Landman became one of Paramount+'s biggest successes in its debut season, drawing comparisons to Taylor Sheridan's other hit Yellowstone while carving out a distinct identity rooted in energy politics and working-class American life. Its depiction of the landman profession — the dealmakers who negotiate mineral rights and lease agreements between oil companies and landowners — offers viewers a rarely seen slice of the machinery that keeps the petroleum industry running. A second season was quickly greenlit given the show's strong viewership numbers.
