Jersey Shore: Family Vacation

American Idol has consistently been one of the most watched reality TV shows of all time and continues to draw huge audiences as each new season begins. Most of the previous winners have gone on to have amazing careers in show business. Winning contestants like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studdard, Taylor Hicks, Lee DeWyze, and Jordin Sparks have gone on to success both professionally as well as financially. Judges have changes recently but the original three (Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell) were perhaps the most entertaining part of the show because they are each strong personalities themselves and tend to stand out while voicing their own unique opinions regarding what talent is all about. Ryan Seacrest has been MC for the entire run of American Idol and he is a former disk jockey who knows something about musical talent himself. Viewers get to watch some contestants stumble and fail because they simply don't have what it takes to perform while the occasional super talent will come along and truly shine, then move on to become the next American Idol.

When Bravo began promoting "The Real Housewives of Orange County" TV series in 2006, the producers and the network hyped the series as a "documentary" hybrid of ABC's monster hit "Desperate Housewives" and Fox's equally popular "The OC." The emphasis on "real" did not suggest "average and ordinary"; instead, it suggested "real" as opposed to the housewives on Wisteria Lane and all the pretty people in the rest of the prime real estate south of Los Angeles and north of Camp Pendleton. In its first several seasons, "The Real Housewives of Orange County" TV show beguiled and enraged viewers with its emphasis on five frighteningly wealthy women ensconced inside an exclusive gated community and addicted to shopping, tanning, and their own petty dramas: for example, should a smart-mouthed, disrespectful daughter get a new BMW or a new Mercedes for her sixteenth birthday? In subsequent seasons, reality has caught-up with the housewives, who have been forced to down-size and down-scale in the wake of job losses, foreclosures, marital problems, and other genuine crises in the lives of "real" housewives.

The premise of this program was to have a panel of guest "experts" help couples with marriage difficulties settle their disagreements without resorting to such disastrous results as a divorce. Often shown in a comedic light, these couples generally argue over issues they take very seriously but the audience may find them laughable. A celebrity panel views a video put together showing what the couple disagree on and decide who should "win" the battle. Additionally there will be a celebrity fact checker who provides solutions through expert consultation which may even include search engine results. The real life couples, which are chosen by producer Jerry Seinfeld, must agree to abide by the panel's decision. The program is not designed to be a sit-com but it does have many humorous moments as a result of the silliness of some couples disagreements. At the end of the show couples usually win a cruise which makes it all worth while. Last heard the show was renewed for a second season even though critics hated it. Let's vote them out and let the guest "experts" decide.

Today the do-it-yourself home video market is extremely busy and popular. Almost anyone who has a cell phone or digital camera can shoot some video any time and anywhere. MTV brings the Funniest Home Video idea into homes with a bunch of amateurish videos that have gone internet viral and for one reason or another, have grabbed the attention of a wide audience. Some subject matter, like guys getting hit in their groin area, may be humorous to some but not so much to others. It's a matter of taste (or maybe lack of it) that gets home produced videos to earn watchability. The title of this show is more or less self explanatory and Rob Dyrdek's idea of fun and entertaining television is robbing entertaining clips from YouTube and presenting them on a network that used to mean something music wise, then turning them into juvenile jokes. Also seen are Chanel "West Coast" and Sterling Brim aka Steelo making comments about what is funny and what was better left on the internet to be lost in space. MTV"¦. let's get back to your roots and play music!
