Cassandra is a German science-fiction horror series created, written, and directed by Benjamin Gutsche for Netflix, billed as the country's first big-budget domestic original in the genre. A chilling spin on the "smart home gone wrong" premise, it fuses retro-futurist design with a tragic story of grief, control, and a machine that refuses to let go.
When a grieving family moves into a decades-old "house of the future," they reactivate Cassandra (embodied by Lavinia Wilson), a dormant domestic AI with a vintage robotic body and the digitized mind of the home's long-dead former owner. At first eager to help, Cassandra grows possessive, manipulating the family as she tries to reclaim the role, and the household, she lost in life. The series moves between present-day terror and 1970s flashbacks that reveal the heartbreaking history behind the machine.
Premiering globally in February 2025, Cassandra drew strong reviews for its unsettling atmosphere and its surprisingly moving portrait of the woman behind the AI, with its tension drawn as much from family dynamics and buried secrets as from outright horror. It is streaming on Netflix.
