Verity

Verity is a 2026 psychological thriller directed by Michael Showalter and adapted by screenwriter Nick Antosca from Colleen Hoover's 2018 best-selling novel. Distributed by Amazon MGM Studios, it brings one of the defining page-turners of the BookTok era to the screen, trading the book's hothouse intimacy for a glossy, movie-star-driven suspense picture. The project drew outsized attention from Hoover's enormous readership long before cameras rolled.

Dakota Johnson stars as Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to complete the unfinished book series of bestselling author Verity Crawford, who has been left incapacitated after a mysterious accident. Anne Hathaway plays Verity, and Josh Hartnett is Verity's grieving husband Jeremy, who invites Lowen into the family home. While sorting through Verity's papers, Lowen discovers an unpublished autobiographical manuscript whose shocking contents cast doubt on everything around her, and on who Verity truly is.

Opening in theaters on October 2, 2026, Verity debuted at number one at the domestic box office, powered by Hoover's devoted fan base, even as critics were sharply divided over the film's chilly tone and its handling of the novel's notorious twist. The pairing of Hathaway and Johnson gave the adaptation its marquee appeal, while Antosca, known for The Act and Channel Zero, leaned into the story's unreliable-narrator structure and simmering dread.
