The Super Mario Bros. Movie

1. It is the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history. With over $1.36 billion worldwide, the film obliterated the previous record held by Warcraft ($439 million) and Detective Pikachu ($450 million), single-handedly proving that faithful video game adaptations could be enormous commercial successes.

2. Jack Black's Bowser ballad became a genuine chart hit. "Peaches" — a lovesick piano ballad Bowser sings about Princess Peach — was written in about an hour and charted on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 83. It was later shortlisted for Academy Award consideration for Best Original Song.

3. Charles Martinet, the longtime voice of Mario, appears in a cameo. Martinet had voiced Mario in Nintendo games since 1992. Rather than recast him silently, the filmmakers gave him a role as Mario and Luigi's father, plus a cameo as the classic "Giuseppe" character — a deliberate passing of the torch.

4. Chris Pratt's casting caused a genuine internet uproar. When Pratt was announced as Mario in 2021, backlash was immediate and intense, with fans insisting Martinet should voice the role. Pratt's deliberately understated Brooklyn accent divided audiences, though it did nothing to slow the film's box office momentum.

5. The film is packed with deep-cut Nintendo references. Beyond the obvious Mario Kart and Donkey Kong sequences, animators hid nods to Punch-Out!!, Balloon Fight, Kid Icarus, and the notoriously obscure Japanese-only games. The Jump Man arcade cabinet in Mario's Brooklyn apartment references Mario's original 1981 name.

6. Illumination reportedly built the Mushroom Kingdom from actual game geometry. Nintendo shared internal design references and level data with the animation team so that environments would match the proportions and physics players intuitively recognize — an unusually deep collaboration for a licensed adaptation.

7. Shigeru Miyamoto was heavily involved as producer. The creator of Mario co-produced the film and had approval over story and character decisions. His involvement was widely credited as the reason the film avoided the tonal missteps that sank the 1993 live-action version.
