Mad Max: Fury Road

1. George Miller spent over fifteen years developing the film. Miller first conceived Fury Road in the late 1990s after Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), but production was repeatedly delayed by the September 11 attacks, which made large-scale filming in remote locations logistically untenable, and by the Iraq War. By the time cameras finally rolled, it had been thirty years since the last Mad Max film.

2. Approximately 80% of the effects were achieved practically in-camera. Around 150 custom-built vehicles were constructed for the film; many were destroyed during production. The production employed roughly 150 stunt performers and aerial riggers, and the chaos visible on screen largely reflects real vehicles, real fire, and real physical danger managed under controlled conditions.

3. Charlize Theron shaved her head and wore a prosthetic arm for the role. To play Furiosa, Theron committed to the complete physical transformation: shaving her hair, wearing a prosthetic left arm cast in silicone, and training for months in combat and vehicle operation. Miller has said Furiosa was always intended to be the film's true protagonist despite Max's name appearing in the title.

4. Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron clashed significantly during production. Both actors have since spoken openly about tensions on set, including Hardy's chronic lateness — reportedly arriving hours late on some days — and a breakdown in communication that required a female producer to act as an intermediary. Theron has said she required a female presence on set for safety after incidents early in production.

5. The film won six Academy Awards — the most of any film at the 88th Oscars — but lost Best Picture to Spotlight. Its six wins covered technical and craft categories; the film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director for Miller. Its Best Picture loss to Spotlight did not diminish its status as one of the most awarded action films in Oscar history.

6. Miller released a preferred black-and-white version called Black and Chrome. In 2017, Miller released a desaturated version of the film he has described as his preferred director's cut, arguing the film's visual composition and performance work are even more powerful when stripped of the vivid orange-and-teal color palette. Both versions are available on home media.

7. The original Mad Max (1979) was made for approximately $400,000 AUD. The contrast with Fury Road's approximately $150 million budget illustrates one of the most dramatic budget trajectories in franchise history, spanning four decades and a shift from guerrilla low-budget filmmaking to one of the most technically complex productions ever mounted in Australia.
