Ali Hazelwood's novel began as fan fiction before she reworked it into an original story, and it became a viral BookTok favorite and a New York Times bestseller that launched her career as a full-time romance author.

To Olive's astonishment, Adam agrees to keep up the ruse, and their fake relationship blossoms into the kind of slow-burn attraction that fans of the book adored. Set against the competitive, often unforgiving world of graduate science, the film mines both comedy and warmth from two guarded people who keep insisting, less and less convincingly, that none of it is real.
Built around the beloved fake-dating trope that helped make the novel a BookTok sensation, the adaptation leans into the chemistry of its leads and the specific texture of lab life and academic ambition.
