Musician Peter Bretter is blindsided when television star Sarah Marshall ends their long relationship for rock singer Aldous Snow. Hoping distance will help, he books a solo holiday at a Hawaiian resort and discovers Sarah and Aldous staying there too.
Resort employee Rachel Jansen helps Peter reconnect with life beyond the breakup, but constant encounters with his former partner keep reopening it. The trip becomes a test of whether Peter can stop defining himself through Sarah and finish the creative work he has put aside.
