If you are very fan of such movies like The Illusionist and The Prestige, the 2013 year will delight you with some brilliant surprises. There are two movies worth your attention in 2013 The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and Now You See Me. And if the second one looks more like some mix with drama and crime genre, the first one is the "pure magic". Much like Nolan's The Prestige, Don Scardino's The Incredible Burt Wonderstone tells a story about two magicians Burt Wonderstone and Anton Marvelton whose performance gained them the first place in world rankings, but suddenly their fortune dried when Anton gets trauma during the performance. It was an accident, but Anton blames Burt for this and leaves the show. Burt has to overcome desperation, he tries to find something credible in his life to draw inspiration for the new magic shows. For worse, a previously unknown street-magician Steve Gray enters a big scene with a dangerous, but much acclaimed trick which builds him the whole show, makes it an enormously popular one. Burt understands that Gray's success means checkmate for him when his beautiful assistant, Jane turns against him and joins Gray. There only salvation for Burt, to convince Anton forgive him and reunite in some new glorious show to overshadow Gray. It's not an easy mission to accomplish, because Anton has moved to Far East and seems to be quite happy without Las Vegas turmoil. Don Scardino managed his best to gather such a brilliant cast in this 30 000 000 USD movie: Jane is played by Olivia Wilde (Relanxious, The Third Person, People Like Us, Deadfall, TRON: Legacy) while main antagonist Steve Gray is portrayed by Jim Carrey (Dumb and Dumber To, Loomis Fargo, Mr. Popper's Penguins). The main character Burt Wonderstone is played by Steve Carell (Frank or Francis, Hope Springs, Date Night) while his partner, Anton Marvelton is depicted by Steve Buscemi (On the Road, Rampart, Grown Ups). And if you are not impressed enough, David Copperfield stars in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone as illusionist David Copperfield, of course.

Based on factual events this film pits a pair of young enthusiastic attorneys against the established big money of the pharmaceutical industry. Seems the big drug companies prevent the use of safer syringes to ward off such accidents happening. They seem willing to risk permanent and sometimes fatal results without consideration for others.ach year millions risk infection and contamination by such diseases as Hepatitis C and even HIV when accidental pricks occur. This time around there are two young lawyers who care enough to pursue it to a settlement even though it stretches their law firms business to near collapse. This even takes on international proportions because of the millions who die each year in Africa due to faulty syringes.

Disgrace

Disgrace is the movie based on the novel by John Coetzee, a Nobel Prize winner. It contains neither morals (what morality can be deduced from such a name?), nor appeals for tolerance, and something like a Hidden of Michael Haneke. There are gaps between blacks and whites which can be found in each episode. The movie does neither overwhelm by political correctness, nor features the newfound equal rights. The tragedy, as the philosopher said, not in collision of right and wrong sides. The tragedy is that both sides are right. Africa and Europe, black and white, villages and cities, children, and fathers: the conflict is known to be eternal, the only question is: does it stands at the level of mutual recriminations and petty mischief like a broken windshield, or grow into genocide or civil war.

The Impossible

It's a Christmas time of 2004. An ordinary British family Henry (Ewan McGregor) and Maria (Naomi Watts) visits Thailand on vacations with their three children: Lucas, who is just turned 7, and his younger brothers Simon and Thomas (children are played by Tom Holland, Oaklee Pendergastand and Samuel Joslin, accordingly). As they reach the Thai hotel, their family suit is upgraded to villa, a horrible decision, as it turns after. They are exchanging some Christmas gifts and heading to the coastline the morning after. Nothing has presaged a catastrophe. But meanwhile the terrible roar is heard from the seaside, and, in the moment, a giant wave of Tsunami covers the shoreline with all the tourists on it, including Henry, Maria and their beloved children. The wave is crashing trees, houses, cars, throwing human bodies to right and left. In a few seconds it appears that Henry, Simon and Thomas were picked up by the strong current and wiped to the inner part of land while Maria and Lucas are struggling for their survive in the roaring waves full of fallen tries which strike them inflicting terrible wounds, and making "the happy end" for them almost impossible. The movie, filmed by Juan Antonio Bayona, an outstanding Spanish director and producer, keeps us on the toes these first 20 minutes. The super-realistic 3D sound of imminent Tsunami is awesome, the pictures of scorched post-Tsunami landscape are phenomenally affecting, and the rest of the story based on true life events is very touchable and tragic.

Mother and Child movie features some mystical idea that everything in our life is connected just too poorly compatible with the prosaic realities of our atomized society. Its more easy to explain the desire of screenplay writer to complete its puzzle plot that analyze the behavior of the characters as the normal human motivations. The presence of stars is only partially redeems shoals of unfinished script, but Watts, who got completely unemotional role of women who throw themselves on every man in sight, once again confirms her rare talent to play a strong blonde in distress. It is thanks to her play, the movie which strives to fly into space on the wings of its own pathos, continues to rely on the land… at least with the little finger of one leg.

Making it into somewhat of a Hatfields vs the McCoys story told Albanian style is The Forgiveness of Blood. Territorial rights along with family honor are long traditions of many nations and in this film we find that conflicts over land owned by families for generations never seem to become resolved, resulting in violence and a blood feud may be the result. Joshua Marston and Albanian Andamion Murataj weave a tale that is absorbing and honest, comparing old fashioned laws and rules against the younger generation's more modern approach to those age old traditions.ark, played by Refet Abazi (The Berlin Project) is a bread delivery man who uses a horse and cart on his daily route. When he is killed because he trespasses on land as he travels his daily route, the daughter Rudina, played by newcomer Sindi Lacej, must set aside her high school life and take over the route which is the family livelihood. An age old tale of property dispute and family traditions, The Forgiveness of Blood is an absorbing story of old verses new ways of life in Albania.

The idea of The Master, which was filmed and released in 2012, could be traced back in 2000, when, as it was reported that Paul Thomas Anderson had the plans to create the movie about The Church of Scientology. However, the issues with the financing have blocked the implementation of conception until The Weinstein Company alongside with Megan Ellison, daughter of billionaire Larry Ellison (co-owner of Oracle Corporation), secured the financing of The Master in full. Likewise it has been some rumors that the movie was stalled because of too much of truth about The Church of Scientology has been revealed by Paul Thomas Anderson when he showcased The Cause sect (which was definitely prototyped from The Church of Scientology) in his movie. And because Hollywood has lots of influential and high-powered scientologists in his womb they have, allegedly, throw sand in the wheels of The Master filming and financing. In spite of the fact that The Church of Scientology Officials have rejected these rumors to be true and repeatedly insisted on their indifference concerning this movie, we have lots of doubts about it. The movie rather colorfully describes the sect and its leader Lancaster Dodd, whose personality was clearly copied from Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and very plausible displayed by talented performance of Philip Seymour Hoffman. You may be familiar with him by the roles in Moneyball, where he played Art Howe and in The Ides of March (Paul Zara). Dodd's apprentice, Freddie Sutton, who has climbed to the top of "The Cause" hierarchy suddenly starts to doubt about his teacher's belief, more and more being convinced the all he has to believe to is nothing more than fruits of his teacher's sick fantasies.
