Director Jane Schoenbrun has described I Saw the TV Glow as a film about the feeling of dissociation, and has said the story emerged directly from their own experience of realizing their gender identity in adulthood. The film's horror, Schoenbrun argues, is not metaphorical but literal: the terror of a self that has been buried and suppressed.
The fictional TV show-within-a-film, The Pink Opaque, was created in loving detail: the production team shot actual episodes in the style of a mid-90s YA supernatural series, with original monster designs, credits, and theme music performed by indie musician Yeule.
The film's soundtrack, co-composed by Schoenbrun with contributions from artists including Phoebe Bridgers and King Woman, received widespread acclaim and was released as a standalone album. Phoebe Bridgers recorded an original song specifically for the film, describing the project as one of the most emotionally meaningful collaborations of her career.
