Key facts

  1. Aftersun is semi-autobiographical, with director Charlotte Wells drawing on memories of real holidays she took with her own father to shape the emotional core of the film.
  2. Paul Mescal prepared for the role of Calum by studying how people behave when they believe they are unobserved, deliberately avoiding performing emotions rather than simply living them.
  3. The film was shot chronologically over 23 days in Turkey, giving the cast time to develop the genuine warmth and ease between father and daughter that the film requires.
  4. Frankie Corio, who plays the young Sophie, had no previous acting experience before being discovered through a casting process that prioritized naturalism over technique.
  5. The recurring strobe-lit dance club sequence — in which a grown Sophie catches a glimpse of her father — was among the last scenes filmed and was designed to function as a visual metaphor for grief's disorienting intrusions into memory.
  6. The film's score, composed by Oliver Coates, uses cello as its primary instrument, chosen to evoke both the innocence of childhood and the melancholy of retrospection without ever being sentimental.
  7. Aftersun won 27 awards from critics circles worldwide and was selected as one of the best films of 2022 by the American Film Institute, the National Board of Review, and the New York Film Critics Circle.

Description

Aftersun is Charlotte Wells's achingly tender debut feature, a film that captures a holiday between a young father and his eleven-year-old daughter through the uncertain light of memory and grief. Sophie (Frankie Corio) and her father Calum (Paul Mescal) spend a vacation at a modest Turkish resort, and the film unspools through fragments — video footage Sophie shot on a camcorder, recalled images, half-heard conversations — as an adult Sophie tries to reconstruct what she did not understand as a child.

What makes Aftersun so quietly devastating is what it withholds. Wells refuses easy explanations, allowing meaning to accumulate through texture: the way Calum holds himself when he thinks no one is watching, the tenderness with which he films his daughter, the unbridgeable gap between a parent's inner life and a child's perception of it. Paul Mescal delivers a performance of extraordinary restraint, communicating depths of sadness through gesture and avoidance rather than declaration.

The film works in the tradition of quiet, personal cinema — closer to poetry than plot — and belongs alongside such introspective works as Mike Mills's 20th Century Women and Kelly Reichardt's Certain Women. Released to a rapturous critical reception, Aftersun earned Paul Mescal an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and established Charlotte Wells as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary world cinema.
