Watson reimagines Dr. John Watson as a Black American diagnostician, a creative choice that was deliberate from the earliest development stages — both producers and Morris Chestnut described it as an opportunity to explore what the character's essential qualities of loyalty, intelligence, and pragmatism look like when freed from the constraints of the Victorian original and placed in a contemporary American context.
The series was developed with the explicit creative thesis that Watson has traditionally been reduced to a supporting role despite being arguably the more emotionally complex of the Holmes-Watson duo — the writers' room studied decades of adaptations specifically to identify which dimensions of Watson's character had been systematically suppressed in service of making Holmes more spectacular.
Morris Chestnut researched diagnostic medicine extensively for the role, spending time with practicing physicians at Pittsburgh medical centers and consulting with diagnosticians who work on genuinely unusual cases — an experience he described as revealing how much of real medical diagnosis depends on the same pattern-recognition and lateral thinking that defines the fictional Watson's entire method.
