Yellowstone

description

Yellowstone is an epic modern Western drama created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, chronicling the Dutton family's fierce and often violent struggle to protect the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch — the largest contiguous ranch in the United States — against encroaching developers, a neighboring Native American reservation, and state and federal government interests. Kevin Costner stars as John Dutton, the family patriarch, a morally complex figure whose ruthlessness in defending his land is matched only by his fierce love for his children and his unshakeable belief in the primacy of the land itself.

The show draws on the grand tradition of the American Western while grounding it firmly in contemporary conflicts over land rights, political power, and family legacy. Taylor Sheridan's writing is notable for its nuanced treatment of competing worldviews — neither ranchers nor indigenous characters are positioned as straightforwardly heroic or villainous, but as people with legitimate, irreconcilable interests colliding over land that all of them love and none of them can share. Kelly Reilly's performance as Beth Dutton became the show's defining fan-favorite element, her ferocious intelligence and emotional commitment making Beth one of the most compelling and discussed characters in contemporary American television.

Yellowstone became a phenomenon on Paramount Network, consistently drawing some of the largest cable television audiences of its era and spawning a franchise of prequel and spinoff series including 1883 and 1923. The show's fifth season became tabloid fodder as Kevin Costner departed amid a contract dispute, leaving the finale and the future of the flagship series in an unprecedented state of uncertainty that captivated both fans and the entertainment press.

Reaper

2021
Drama
Slackers serving Satan as his bounty hunters? At a bare minimum, "The Reaper" does offer conclusive proof that colluding with the devil is considerably more exciting than a job at the Work Bench, a fictional Seattle home improvement store. Imagine Sam Oliver's surprise when he learns on his twenty-first birthday his parents negotiated a long-ago deal with the captain of the underworld: Save daddy's life, and they will give Satan their first-born child. Of course, mom and dad used every form of contraception imaginable until Satan released their doctor from his gambling debts in exchange for Doc's telling mom and dad they could not conceive. Sam ensues. Satan himself shows-up at the big twenty-first gala to detail "The Reaper's" new job description. Sam, who once complained that college "made him sleepy," naturally balks at the devil's deal; but the devil is at least as persuasive with Sam as he was with Eve. Satan tells Sam, should he decline, his mother forfeits her soul. Sam grudgingly accepts new super-powers and goes to work hunting down wayward sinners who have contrived to escape Hell. Television drama ensues. "The Reaper" earned an extremely devoted"”albeit somewhat cultish"”following. A representative review explained the attraction: "This show is so refreshing - great premise, great characters, and they don't take themselves too seriously. The Devil is a hunk, and just couldn't be played better than Ray Wise."

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

2021
Drama
"CSI" TV shows reveals the side of Las Vegas tourists seldom see... Gil Grissom, team leader of the Las Vegas Crime Scene Investigation unit, pioneered the intensity that has become the signature quality in all of Jerry Bruckheimer's heroes; but his flaws were closer to the surface and more genuinely tragic than Horatio Kane's or Mac Taylor's. William Peterson put a handsome face on dorkitude, but he seldom could conceal his passion for insects and his perverse fascination with the world of bondage and discipline. When Grissom bid adios to "CSI," Catherine Willows naturally stepped-up to take his place, dragging her single-mom issues and checkered past along with her. Blasting from relative obscurity to television uber-stardom, Marg Helgenberger has so thoroughly imprinted her own style on her character that fans expect her to sign "Catherine Willows" as her autograph. More old-fashioned gumshoe than techie whiz-kid, Willows nevertheless guides her hyper-dedicated team with skill, style, and love. No more sophisticated than any other television crime drama, "CSI" nevertheless has owned its time slot since its debut, because its characters combine street-savvy toughness with genuine likability. And who can resist all those cool shots of bullets blasting through brain matter? Trivia devotees will note that songstress Taylor Swift made her critically acclaimed acting debut on "CSI," playing the a dark, troubled, and ultimately dead "goth" girl in search of love and understanding"”in other words, the diametric opposite of her authentic self.
