Shōgun is a 2024 historical drama series created by Rachel Kondo and Caillin Puente for FX, adapted from James Clavell's epic 1975 novel of the same name. Set in feudal Japan in the year 1600, the series follows English navigator John Blackthorne, whose shipwreck on the Japanese coast places him at the center of a volatile political struggle between warring lords competing to control the nation — and its future.
The series stars Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, a brilliant and calculating daimyō fighting for survival against the Council of Regents, and Cosmo Jarvis as Blackthorne, the English pilot major whose arrival gives Toranaga an unexpected asset. Anna Sawai plays Lady Toda Mariko, a Christian convert and skilled translator caught between duty, faith, and impossible loyalty. The production was shot largely in English and Japanese with subtitles — a creative choice that added remarkable authenticity and depth to the storytelling.
Shōgun premiered in February 2024 and rapidly became one of the most acclaimed television events of the year. It swept the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, winning Outstanding Drama Series and every other major drama category it was nominated in — the most dominant Emmy performance by a drama series in television history, and a landmark achievement for an Asian-led production on American television.
