Straw Dogs

George Smiley was a disgrace as a British spy back when the "Cold War" was the world's biggest threat. The mid 20th century found much of the free world in fear of those who chose to do harm to any who did not agree with their way of thinking. Soviet Russia was the biggest threat at the time and we used spies to investigate what they were up to constantly. They, in turn, also had their spies who kept a close eye on the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Based on a classic novel with the same title, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy tells a tale of intrigue and quiet desperation that depicts the spy among us who went about their business without fear for their own lives. Men like George Smiley (Gary Oldman from The Dark Knight, Air Force One), who comes out of retirement to find a "mole" who has infiltrated the Secret Intelligence Service and is a threat to all things right in the world. What ensues makes for an excellent story and even though slow in parts, is well worth viewing.

While trapped inside her apartment, Everly faces off with hired killers and even other prostitutes who have been promised a bounty if they are able to kill her. The film features music by Bear McCreary, who did the soundtrack for the rebooted version of the Battlestar Galactica television series. Lynch originally wrote the story while listening to the soundtrack for the second season of the show. Early reviews of the film have been mixed to positive, and compared to the early Die Hard movies or the blood-spattered epic of Kill Bill. The film plays toward assassin and mafia tropes and offers little in the way of plot, but plenty in the way of action.

The "shady" action of Lawless is unfolding in times of Great Depression which covered America in in the 1930s. The Prohibition Law and followed mass bootlegging and rum-running led to organized crime wide spreading across the USA. This "dark times" of twenty century were laid down in the movie storyline by the writers Nick Cave (screenplay), Matt Bondurant (novel) and mastermind Megan Ellison (daughter of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison's) who shepherded this project. For those who like watching movies about the gangs rending the "society of law abiding citizens" this film would be a great choice, mostly because of perfectly selected cast. You should agree, not every day you see Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman and Shia LaBeouf all playing the gangsters and Guy Pearce as Special Agent. Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Dane DeHaan, Jason Clarke and Noah Taylor are continuing the star cast of the movie. But the great choice of actors is not crucial strength of Lawless, the thrilling dramatic scenes and scale of the "just unfolding" war between gangs and authorities will keep you engaged all the 135 minutes.
