Song Sung Blue is a 2025 musical drama written and directed by Craig Brewer, the filmmaker behind Hustle & Flow and Dolemite Is My Name, and released theatrically by Focus Features on Christmas Day. It is adapted from Greg Kohs's 2008 documentary of the same name, which chronicled the real lives of two Milwaukee musicians who turned a shared love of Neil Diamond into an unlikely second act. Brewer reshapes that true story into a crowd-pleasing, big-hearted ode to music, reinvention, and devotion.
Hugh Jackman stars as Mike Sardina, known on stage as “Lightning,” opposite Kate Hudson as Claire Cartwright, his “Thunder,” two working musicians who join forces as the Neil Diamond tribute duo Lightning & Thunder and fall in love along the way. Their partnership is tested by a devastating accident, a heart attack, and hard financial years, as the film builds toward a comeback gig in their hometown. Michael Imperioli, Jim Belushi, Fisher Stevens, Mustafa Shakir, and the musician King Princess round out the ensemble, with Neil Diamond himself licensing his songbook for the film just as he had for the original documentary.
Reviews were generally favorable, with critics reserving their highest praise for Kate Hudson, whose performance earned a sweep of awards-season nominations including the Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. A modest box-office earner buoyed by an “A” CinemaScore and a soundtrack that charted internationally, it found a wide second audience at home. Song Sung Blue is streaming on Peacock.
