Robbie Williams personally requested to be depicted as a chimpanzee in the film, feeling it captured his lifelong sense of being an outsider and his complicated relationship with his own ego.
The CGI chimpanzee required over 1,500 visual effects shots and was performed by Jonno Davies in a motion-capture suit, with an AI-driven face-replacement pipeline mapping his performance onto the digital primate.
Better Man marks the only major studio biographical musical where the subject is alive and actively involved in approving their own depiction as a non-human digital character — a first in cinema history.
Better Man is a bold and unconventional biographical musical directed by Michael Gracey, chronicling the extraordinary rise of British pop superstar Robbie Williams. In a daring creative choice, Williams is portrayed not by a human actor but as a photorealistic CGI chimpanzee — a representation Williams himself endorsed as a reflection of how he has always felt different and out of place in the spotlight.
The film traces Williams’ journey from his early days as a member of Take That through his explosive solo career, his struggles with addiction, mental health crises, and his eventual personal redemption. Featuring both original music and beloved hits, the film is as much a concert experience as it is a biopic, with spectacular musical set pieces that bring iconic moments from Williams’ career to life.
Released to strong critical praise, Better Man is distinguished by its emotional honesty and its willingness to portray fame’s darkest corners without flinching. Williams’ vulnerability and self-deprecating wit shine throughout, making the film a deeply personal portrait of one of the UK’s most successful solo artists.
