The film began as a web series that Kane Parsons started posting to YouTube in January 2022, when he was still a teenager; those shorts, inspired by an internet creepypasta about "liminal spaces," amassed hundreds of millions of views and led directly to the A24 feature.
Produced on a budget of roughly $10 million, the film grossed over $400 million worldwide, and Parsons became the youngest filmmaker ever to direct a number-one movie at the U.S. box office.
Rather than rely on digital environments, the production built more than 30,000 square feet of the Backrooms' maze-like interiors across sound stages, using real corridors and rooms to sell the story's oppressive, never-ending sameness.
Backrooms is a 2026 horror film from A24, the feature directorial debut of Kane Parsons, who created the viral YouTube web series of the same name while still a teenager. Adapted and expanded from that internet phenomenon, it brings the "liminal space" creepypasta, endless humming corridors of deserted, fluorescent-lit rooms, to the big screen.
The story follows characters who slip out of ordinary reality into an ever-shifting dimension of empty hallways, stalked by things that lurk in its monotony. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve lead the cast, alongside Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell, as the trapped survivors race to find a way back before the maze swallows them whole.
Made for a reported $10 million, Backrooms became a surprise phenomenon, grossing more than $400 million worldwide and drawing strong reviews, with an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes, for Parsons's assured, unnerving direction; he became the youngest filmmaker ever to top the U.S. box office.
