1. Jenna Ortega choreographed her own viral dance. The dance sequence in episode four was largely choreographed by Ortega herself over a single weekend, drawing on Bob Fosse, Lisa Loring's original Wednesday Addams, and goth nightclub culture. The clip accumulated hundreds of millions of views in its first week online and sparked a global imitation trend.
2. Tim Burton directed the entire first season. Burton directed all eight episodes of Season 1, giving the show a visual coherence rarely achieved in prestige streaming productions with large episode counts. His complete directorial involvement was announced as a major selling point for the series from its earliest marketing.
3. Principal photography was based in Romania. Most of the series was shot in Bucharest and surrounding areas of Romania, which provided both a cost-effective production environment and an inventory of gothic and neoclassical architecture perfectly suited to the show's eerie visual aesthetic.
4. The series became Netflix's third most-watched ever. Within its debut month, Season 1 accumulated over 1.2 billion viewing hours, making it Netflix's third most-watched series in the platform's history at that time, behind only Stranger Things Season 4 and Squid Game Season 1.
5. Jenna Ortega won the Golden Globe for her performance. Ortega took home the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy in January 2023, cementing her status as one of the defining young stars of the streaming era and one of the fastest-rising talents in Hollywood.
6. Christina Ricci appears in a different role. Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in the 1991 and 1993 Addams Family films, appears in the Netflix series as Nevermore teacher Marilyn Thornhill — a casting decision that bridges the franchise's generations and rewards long-term fans of the original films.
7. Tim Burton drew on specific artistic inspirations. Burton cited Edward Gorey's illustrated books, German Expressionist cinema, and Victorian Gothic revival architecture as the primary visual inspirations for Nevermore Academy's look and atmosphere, giving the school's design a layered art-historical depth.
Wednesday is a supernatural mystery series created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with its visual identity shaped by director Tim Burton, who helmed the entire first season. Jenna Ortega stars as Wednesday Addams, the deadpan, macabre daughter of the Addams Family, now enrolled at Nevermore Academy — a school for outcasts with supernatural abilities. Navigating adolescent social hierarchies with her customary disdain for human connection, Wednesday discovers she possesses a psychic gift she cannot control, and begins investigating a string of monster attacks terrorizing the surrounding town of Jericho.
The series masterfully blends coming-of-age drama with gothic horror and murder mystery, channeling the spirit of the classic Addams Family while forging an entirely new narrative identity. Ortega's performance electrified audiences with its precise physicality and deadpan wit, and her independently choreographed dance sequence in episode four became one of the most-viewed clips in Netflix history within days of the show's premiere, spawning a global social media trend that extended the show's cultural reach far beyond its subscriber base.
Wednesday broke multiple Netflix viewing records upon its debut in November 2022, becoming the third-most-watched Netflix series of all time and spending five weeks in the global number-one position. The show was quickly renewed for a second season, with additional directors brought on to expand the series' visual landscape. Ortega won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Television Series for her transformative performance in the first season.
