"Cruel Summer" is a television series that premiered in April 2021 on the Freeform network in the United States. It is a psychological thriller that follows two teenage girls, Jeanette Turner and Kate Wallis, living in a small Texas town in the 1990s. Jeanette is an unpopular girl who idolizes Kate, a popular girl with a seemingly perfect life. However, Kate goes missing one day, and Jeanette starts to become more popular while Kate's life unravels.
The series is told through a nonlinear narrative, with each episode taking place in a different year between 1993 and 1995, and alternating between Jeanette and Kate's perspectives. As the story unfolds, viewers see how the girls' lives intersected and how their relationships with each other and those around them changed over time. There are many twists and turns throughout the series, and viewers are left guessing about what really happened to Kate until the final episode.
The series has received positive reviews for its suspenseful plot and strong performances by its cast, particularly its three leads: Olivia Holt as Kate, Chiara Aurelia as Jeanette, and Froy Gutierrez as Jamie, a friend of both girls. "Cruel Summer" has also been praised for its portrayal of complex teenage relationships and the impact of trauma on young people.
