True Detective: Night Country (2024) is the fourth season of HBO's celebrated anthology crime series, and the first to be created and showrun entirely by someone other than Nic Pizzolatto. Mexican filmmaker Issa López steps into the writer-director chair and immediately makes the series her own, setting the story in Ennis, a fictional small town on the coast of Alaska during the dead of polar winter — weeks of total darkness that press against the characters as relentlessly as the investigation itself. When eight researchers vanish without trace from the remote Tsalal Arctic Research Station, two detectives with a fractured shared history are forced back into each other's orbit to solve it: Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster), pragmatic and ruthlessly competent, and Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis), who carries old wounds and a personal stake in the outcome that she can't fully articulate.

López imports elements of her background in supernatural thriller filmmaking into what is ostensibly a procedural, and the result is True Detective's most genuinely unsettling season since the first. The darkness of the Alaskan setting is not merely atmospheric — it becomes a psychological condition, and the series uses it to interrogate questions of memory, guilt, and the violent history of the land beneath the ice. The indigenous Iñupiaq community's presence and perspective are woven into the narrative rather than used as local color, giving the season a specificity that previous installments sometimes lacked.

Jodie Foster's performance is the spine of the season — authoritative, funny, withholding, and ultimately devastating in its final movements. Kali Reis, a professional boxer in her breakout acting role, more than holds her own opposite Foster, and their partnership develops into one of the most compelling detective duos the anthology has produced. Night Country divided some viewers expecting a return to the metaphysical South of Season 1, but on its own terms it is a fully realized piece of television that rewards patience and attention.
