Uzo Aduba, best known for playing Suzanne in Orange Is the New Black, has described Cordelia Cupp as her most technically demanding role to date, a character who must be simultaneously ridiculous and completely credible as a genius. Aduba worked with movement coaches and studied classic screen eccentrics from Peter Sellers to Columbo to develop Cupp's distinctive physicality.
Executive producer Shonda Rhimes has said that The Residence was born from her love of classic golden-age mystery fiction, specifically the Agatha Christie tradition of setting an impossible crime in a closed, socially stratified location and making the detective the most unusual person in the room. The White House was chosen as the ultimate version of that closed-house setting.
The production was granted access to White House archival photographs and floor plans for research, allowing the design team to build a highly accurate replica of the residential floors. The set, constructed on soundstages in Los Angeles, reportedly took four months to build and dress to the level of detail the show required.
When a murder occurs inside the White House, eccentric and brilliant detective Cordelia Cupp is brought in to solve a case that threatens to upend the most secure residence in the world. With 157 suspects drawn from the entire staff of the White House and a president's legacy at stake, Cupp must navigate a labyrinth of secrets, loyalties, and institutional lies.
Created by Paul William Davies and executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, The Residence is a delightfully theatrical Netflix murder mystery starring Uzo Aduba as Cupp, a detective who approaches crime scenes with the flamboyance of a one-woman theatrical production. The show is steeped in the tradition of classic whodunit, Agatha Christie by way of the West Wing, but filtered through Rhimes's signature voice.
Praised for Aduba's magnetic, unrestrained performance and for its wit and confidence as a piece of entertainment, The Residence became one of Netflix's most-discussed limited series of 2025. It is the rare prestige streaming production that wears its genre pleasures proudly, offering a mystery that is as fun to watch as it is well-crafted.
