The Perfect Couple

description

The Perfect Couple is a 2024 Netflix limited series based on Elin Hilderbrand's bestselling novel, set over a single catastrophic weekend at the Nantucket estate of the Winbury family — one of those old-money enclaves where every surface gleams and every relationship conceals a different kind of rot. Nicole Kidman plays Greer Winbury, the family's glamorous matriarch and famous crime novelist, whose son Tag is about to marry Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson). When a body is discovered on the morning of the wedding, the guests become suspects and the Winbury family's careful performance of perfection begins to come apart in ways that are by turns darkly comic and genuinely chilling.

The series belongs to a genre that has thrived in the streaming era: the wealthy-enclave murder mystery where conspicuous consumption and deep social anxiety combine to produce violence that feels both inevitable and shocking. Executive producer and director Susanne Bier brings a precise eye that strips the warm color palette of Nantucket's aesthetic and reveals the cold calculation beneath it. Nicole Kidman anchors everything with a performance of magnificent control: Greer is charming, manipulative, fundamentally unknowable, and the show's central mystery extends to her interior life as much as to the crime itself. Liev Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Billy Howle, and Meghann Fahy round out a cast each given adequate material to make their character's hidden life plausible.

The Perfect Couple became one of Netflix's most-watched series in the weeks following its September 2024 premiere, generating the kind of social-media conversation that the platform had previously seen from shows like The White Lotus — audiences gathering to debate suspects, revisit clues, and marvel at Kidman's performance. It is less formally audacious than the best of the wealthy-enclave genre but more precisely enjoyable than many of its peers, delivering exactly the blend of sun-drenched anxiety, sharp dialogue, and carefully timed reveals that has made Hilderbrand's novels consistent bestsellers. The complete series streams on Netflix.

Hiring former fugitives to assist the U.S. Marshals with cleaning up the mean streets sounds like a far fetched idea but it works, at least on Breakout Kings. After all who would know better how to outwit the bad guys than former criminals themselves? They don't get off scott free exactly but do receive time off their sentences for aiding in the capture of crooks and as they get one month off their sentence for each criminal they help apprehend it makes sense that they work hard for their eventual release. Most of the "cons" do appreciate the opportunity to reduce their jail time and even get enthused with the prospect of turning over bad guys themselves. Charlie Duchamp (Laz Alonso from Fast & Furious, Avatar) is head of the task force and a previous member of the Criminal Program Analysis Department. A heart ailment kept him tied to his desk job but he still manages to break records getting the criminals reined in. Ray Zancanelli (played by Domenick Lombardozzi from Public Enemies, Miami Vice) lost his Marshals job due to a theft conviction. He works well with the criminal set because he knows the territory so well. Brooke Nevin (Sherman's Way, Infestation) is Julianne Simms, student of law enforcement who has mental issues keeping her from her full potential. This "mixed bag" of law enforcers work well together, keeping criminals in line most of the time.
