The show was originally developed for Starz, but Netflix acquired the U.S. rights shortly before its release — a gamble that paid off when it drew more than two billion minutes of viewing in its second week and climbed into Netflix's global top three.
Star Malin Akerman has said she used Melania Trump as a reference point in building her character, the poised and formidable Texas socialite Margo Banks.
Though set in East Texas, the series was filmed in North Carolina, with downtown Mooresville transformed into the fictional town of Maple Brook during the 2024 shoot.
The Hunting Wives is a steamy, twist-laden crime drama created by Rebecca Cutter and adapted from May Cobb's 2021 novel. After debuting on Netflix in July 2025, it became one of the summer's biggest streaming surprises, blending Southern-fried melodrama, murder mystery, and soapy erotic thriller into a bingeable package.
Brittany Snow plays Sophie O'Neil, a Massachusetts transplant who follows her husband to a wealthy East Texas town and is quickly drawn into the orbit of Margo Banks (Malin Akerman), the magnetic, gun-toting queen bee of a clique of influential wives. When a teenage girl turns up dead, Sophie becomes the prime suspect, and the group's glossy world of guns, God, and gossip cracks open to reveal blackmail, affairs, and long-hidden crimes. Dermot Mulroney, Katie Lowes, and Chrissy Metz co-star.
Originally commissioned by Starz before Netflix acquired the U.S. rights, the series rocketed up the charts on release, drawing more than two billion minutes of viewing in a single week and earning an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score. Its addictive cliffhangers and camp confidence quickly made it a word-of-mouth phenomenon and secured a second season.
