description

Sunny is a stylish, melancholy Apple TV+ series created by Katie Robbins, adapting Colin O'Sullivan's novel The Dark Manual. Set in a beautifully realized near-future Kyoto, it blends science fiction, mystery, black comedy, and yakuza thriller into a singular story about grief, technology, and the unknowability of the people we love.

Rashida Jones stars as Suzie Sakamoto, an American woman living in Japan whose husband and young son vanish in a mysterious plane crash. In her devastation she is given Sunny, a domestic "homebot" that her supposedly deceased husband secretly designed, despite having always claimed to work on refrigerators. As Suzie and the eerily endearing robot form an uneasy bond, they begin pulling at threads that lead into robot violence, corporate secrets, and the criminal underworld, forcing Suzie to confront how little she truly knew about her own family. Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura as the voice of Sunny, and Judy Ongg round out the cast.

Premiering in July 2024, Sunny earned warm reviews, including a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, for its gorgeous design, its tonal daring, and Jones's prickly, grief-stricken performance. A distinctive, genre-bending mystery, it stands out as one of Apple TV+'s most visually and emotionally ambitious originals. It is streaming on Apple TV+.

Paradise

Sci-Fi & Fantasy

"Paradise" (Spanish: "Paraíso") is a Spanish television series that premiered on June 4th, 2021. It is a speculative fiction show set in the 1990s and features elements of mystery and adventure. The story revolves around the disappearance of three teenage girls, Sandra, Elena, and Malena, in the fictional coastal town of Almanzora de la Vega. When the police investigation seems to be going nowhere, Sandra's younger brother Javi teams up with Quino, Álvaro, and Zeta to find them.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Before "Twilight" beguiled a billion teen-age hearts and "True Blood" took over Louisiana and Sunday night ratings, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" rescued seriously besieged Sunnydale, California, from werewolves, vampires, zombies, and random undead. Created by uber-vamp writer-producer Joss Whedon, who felt profoundly disappointed with the film version of his original premise, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" helped the fledgling WB network hold its own against "the big 4," and it made Sarah Michlelle Gellar a tween and teen icon. In each episode, Buffy and her posse of slayers known as "the Scooby gang," follow sage advice from The Watcher as they banish fearful creatures from their otherwise peaceful and perfect suburb. Whedon insisted, "The supernatural elements in the series stood as metaphors personal anxieties associated with adolescence and young adulthood." Whedon's allegories may have been lost under cute teen fashions, but the dramas' substance attracted critics' attention, earning the show 3 Emmy Awards and a tribute show from the Television Academy when it left the air in 2003.

Stargate Universe

Sci-Fi & Fantasy

"Stargate Universe TV show" (aka SGU) premiered on Syfy in September, 2009, part of a larger Stargate franchise, which has a production history at least as complicated as the plots of all the Star Treks combined. The immediate success of "Stargate Universe" provides the living proof that the ComicCon crowd never tires of going boldly where no man has gone before. The situation is more than a little reminiscent of "Battlestar Gallactica," but edgier and richer in good one-liners. This time, a group of intrepid explorers whose own ship has been disabled boards a crewless ship permanently locked on cruise control and set to go to the ends of the universe. Because they have no hope of returning to Earth, the eclectic crew of scientists, soldiers, and civilians must figure out how they will survive by their wits and the ship's tools as they float around the edges of the galaxy. Of course, the struggle for survival brings out the noblest qualities in the heroes, the vilest qualities in the villains, and hundreds of opportunities for uber-cool special effects.

Haven

Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Even though the television series Haven does not exactly read like a Stephen King novel, it is loosely based on one of his recent works called the Colorado Kid. Filmed in Nova Scotia Canada, Haven is well written with a science fiction based plot. An FBI agent, Audrey Parker portrayed by Emily Rose (Brothers & Sisters, Jericho) arrives in the sea side town of Haven, Maine working what begins as a routine case but soon develops into something more supernatural. Seems people disappear for unknown reasons. Additionally she finds her long dead mother, whom she never met, may be involved. Also starring Lucas Bryant (Dollhouse, Queer as Folk) as local cop, Nathan Wuornos, who teams up with Parker to solve some of the strange goings on in Haven. He's got problems of his own with what he calls his "idiopathic Neuropathy" which is a condition that keeps him from literally feeling anything. Eric Balfour (Hawaii, The O.C.) plays Duke Crocker, a local who seems a jack of all trades and has plenty to hide. Chief of Police in Haven is Garland Wuornos (played by Nicholas Campbell (from Diamond's, The Hitchhiker) is Nathan's father and tries to convince Audrey Parker to stay on in Haven and solve the supernatural "troubles" the residents encounter.

Sci-Fi & Fantasy

A 1983 mini-series gets a 2011 make-over, more sinister and creepy than ever. As "V" begins, hunormous space ships appear over twenty-nine major cities around the world, and Anna, leader of the technologically advanced alien species piloting the spacecraft, assures terrified earthlings she and her people come in peace. Of course, Anna is lying. "V" writers, directors, and producers clearly understand the dynamics of terror and suspense, and they especially know how to plot a cliff-hanger. "V" attracted legions of loyal viewers during its premier season in spring, 2010, and it left thousands of beguiling plot possibilities for its 2011 season. Every "V" viewer anticipates the inevitable, imminent Anna-Erica smackdown, and Earth's future turns on the outcome"”"appointment television" for sure.
