1. Created by Rian Johnson of Knives Out fame. Poker Face was created and frequently directed by Rian Johnson, who developed the show as a passion project between Knives Out sequels, channeling his lifelong love of classic American detective television into an original series.
2. Natasha Lyonne co-developed the character. Star Natasha Lyonne was a co-developer on the series and worked closely with Johnson to shape Charlie Cale's voice, backstory, and worldview, ensuring the character felt authentic rather than like a standard procedural lead.
3. Directly inspired by Columbo. Johnson has spoken extensively about Columbo as the primary template for Poker Face's inverted mystery format, in which the audience sees the crime committed before Charlie arrives and must watch her slowly, cheerfully work her way to the truth.
4. Each episode features a different guest star. The show is structured as a series of self-contained mysteries with a rotating cast of guest stars including Adrien Brody, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Chloë Sevigny, Stephanie Hsu, and Tim Meadows, among many others.
5. Shot across multiple US states to capture Charlie's cross-country journey. The production filmed on location across the United States to authentically represent Charlie's drifting life, giving each episode its own distinct visual identity tied to a specific American environment or subculture.
6. Natasha Lyonne earned a Golden Globe nomination. Lyonne's performance as Charlie Cale earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Series, with critics calling it one of the most naturally charismatic TV performances in years.
7. A second season was renewed before the first season ended. Peacock renewed Poker Face for a second season while the first was still airing, a testament to the show's immediate critical success and strong viewer engagement on the platform.
Poker Face is a 2023 Peacock original mystery series created by Rian Johnson, the filmmaker behind Knives Out and its sequels. The show stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a woman with an extraordinary gift: she can always tell when someone is lying. After a confrontation with a dangerous casino boss forces her to go on the run, Charlie drifts across America in a battered Plymouth Barracuda, stumbling into a different murder case every week and using her supernatural instincts to uncover the truth.
The series is a loving, expertly crafted homage to the classic American detective shows of the 1970s and 1980s, particularly Columbo. Each episode opens with the murder itself, showing the audience precisely what happened and who did it, before Charlie arrives and slowly, charmingly pieces it together. This inverted mystery format puts all the dramatic tension on how rather than who, and Lyonne's performance is so magnetic and lived-in that the show works even when it isn't trying to surprise anyone. The guest cast across the season is exceptional, featuring names like Adrien Brody, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Chloë Sevigny, and Stephanie Hsu.
Poker Face became one of the most acclaimed television series of 2023, earning Natasha Lyonne a Golden Globe nomination and near-universal praise from critics who called it the most purely entertaining show of the year. Johnson's sharp direction across multiple episodes and Benjamin Millepied's retro-inflected score give the show a consistent identity that holds it together across its standalone episode structure. A second season is in production.
