Outer Range was initially conceived as a limited series before Amazon Prime Video recognized its potential and expanded it into an ongoing drama, a decision that allowed creator Brian Watkins to develop the mythology far beyond its original scope. Josh Brolin has described Royal Abbott as the most physically and emotionally demanding role of his career, requiring him to embody a man grappling with concepts that stretch the limits of human comprehension. The series was filmed on location in New Mexico, standing in for Wyoming, with the production team spending weeks scouting remote high desert terrain to find landscapes that could feel genuinely timeless. The show's sound design was recognized with Emmy nominations for its innovative use of low-frequency audio to convey the disorienting, gravitational pull of the void. Season 2 introduced a time-travel structure that required the writers' room to construct a detailed internal chronology spanning more than a century of Abbott family history.
Outer Range returns for a second season that deepens the mysteries of the Abbott ranch and the impossible void that has consumed the Abbotts' lives. Josh Brolin delivers another towering performance as Royal Abbott, a Wyoming rancher whose discovery of a bottomless pit on his land has unravelled not just his family but the fabric of time itself. Season 2 expands the show's temporal scope dramatically, pulling characters across different eras and forcing confrontations between past and future selves that carry genuine emotional devastation. Creator Brian Watkins pushes the series' blend of Western mythology, existential dread, and hard science fiction into bolder territory, delivering one of Prime Video's most ambitious and singular dramatic offerings.
