description

FUBAR is Netflix's big, broad action-comedy built around a genuine piece of movie history: Arnold Schwarzenegger's first leading role in a scripted television series. Created by Nick Santora, the show leans gleefully into Schwarzenegger's screen legend, casting him as a veteran CIA operative whose family life proves every bit as combustible as his missions.

Schwarzenegger plays Luke Brunner, a CIA man on the brink of retirement who discovers that his daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) is secretly a fellow agent, forcing the bickering father and daughter to work side by side. The second season, which arrived in 2025, raises the stakes considerably: with their cover blown, the Brunners are pushed into witness protection and squared off against a new threat, while Oscar nominee Carrie-Anne Moss joins as Greta, a former East German spy and old flame of Luke's whose loyalties stay tantalizingly unclear.

The series has always been more crowd-pleaser than critical darling, and the second season drew mixed reviews even as it delivered the explosions, one-liners and winking Schwarzenegger references fans came for. Netflix ultimately ended the show after two seasons, but its mix of spy spectacle and family sitcom kept it a popular comfort-watch. It streams on Netflix.

Trauma

Action & Adventure

"Trauma" survived almost a whole season in NBC's primetime line-up, but it ultimately became a victim of the Jay Leno scheduling brouhaha and its own penchant for taking itself much too seriously. The promotional materials for "Trauma" declared, "Executive producer Peter Berg delivers"¦the first high-octane medical drama series to live exclusively in the field where the real action is." The promo went on to describe "Trauma" as "an adrenaline shot to the heart," but viewers tended to characterize it as a sedative shot to higher consciousness, complaining that characters were stereotypic and plots were contrived. For all of its melodrama, "Trauma" did set valuable precedents for other, better-written medical dramas: The plots promoted paramedics and nurses over physicians as the true wonderworkers of emergency medicine, and the paramedic team included an openly gay character whom the writers treated with considerable insight and sensitivity. Held against TLC's "Life in the ER," "Trauma" betrayed its promise of realism, but it occasionally showed the promise of medical dramas focused on real caregivers instead of over-educated biochemists.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Action & Adventure

The writers at imdb.com go right to the point: When you tune in to "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," you "Watch the story of history's greatest gladiator unfold with graphic violence and explicit sex." What's not to like? Hunky heart-throb John Hannah plays Gannicus, "original champion of the House of Battiatus," who champions his own lusts and appetites at least as proficiently as he swings his sword. Astute observers might characterize Gannicus as the Brett Favre of the Roman Colliseum. If only texting on stone tablets weren't so clumsy, the messages would be the same. And, for legions of feminist fans who have missed Lucy Lawless's distinctive brand of butt-kicking girl power, her return to the small screen as Lucretia represents living proof there is justice in the world. This time, however, Lawless's character derives her slightly larger-than-life sexiness and skill from exquisite powers of observation and well-timed tugs on "the levers of power." If "The Good Wife" had a Roman prototype, Lucretia was she. According to the "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" web site, "Together, they will stop at nothing to deceive the masses, seize power, and bleed Capua dry."
