Author Blake Crouch wrote the television adaptation himself, making Dark Matter one of the rare cases where a bestselling novelist also served as showrunner and primary writer for the adaptation of their own work — an arrangement that allowed the series to preserve the novel's internal scientific logic while expanding scenes and subplots that the book's pacing did not have room to develop.
Joel Edgerton played both versions of Jason Dessen — the displaced physicist and the alternate-timeline version who took his place — requiring him to develop distinct physical vocabularies for each character that would remain clearly distinguishable even in close-up, a challenge he addressed through months of preparation exploring how different life choices would alter a man's bearing, tempo, and relationship to his own body.
The multiverse corridor sequences, in which Jason traverses the space between parallel realities, were designed to feel genuinely disorienting and non-Euclidean — a visual language built on consultation with theoretical physicists about how non-standard spacetime might manifest to a human observer, rather than drawing from existing science fiction visual conventions established by prior multiverse films and series.

Dark Matter is a 2024 science fiction thriller series created by Blake Crouch, adapted from his own 2016 bestselling novel of the same name. The show premiered exclusively on Apple TV+ and stars Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen, a physicist in Chicago who is abducted one night, injected with a mysterious substance, and wakes in an alternate version of his own life — one in which he chose a different path decades earlier, becoming a celebrated scientist rather than a husband and father. The series is structured around Jason's desperate journey to understand what happened and find his way back to the wife and son he loves, requiring him to navigate a multiverse in which every choice has spawned a parallel version of existence.
Jennifer Connelly plays Daniela, Jason's wife — a painter whose life in the alternate timeline diverged in ways that make her both recognizable and deeply foreign to him. Alice Braga plays Amanda, a therapist in the alternate world who becomes Jason's guide through the multiverse. Edgerton carries the dual burden of playing both the protagonist who has been displaced and the antagonist who displaced him — a performance challenge requiring sustained tonal differentiation across the season while preserving the fundamental recognizability of one man's essential character.
Dark Matter arrived as one of Apple TV+'s most-watched series of 2024, praised for Edgerton's restrained and physically demanding dual performance, the screenplay's faithful engagement with Crouch's physics concepts, and the series' ability to sustain genuine suspense around a premise that is inherently about resolution. The multiverse corridor sequences became among the most discussed visual effects work on any streaming service that year. It streams exclusively on Apple TV+.
