Malcolm Washington, who directed the film, is the son of Denzel Washington, who produced it and has long championed August Wilson's work on screen. John David Washington, who stars as Boy Willie, is Malcolm's brother and Denzel's son, making The Piano Lesson a genuine multi-generational family project.
August Wilson's 10-play Pittsburgh Cycle chronicles Black American life decade by decade throughout the 20th century. Wilson himself adapted the play for the screen before his death in 2005, meaning this film uses a script the playwright crafted with cinema specifically in mind.
The titular piano is a character in its own right: production designers built a replica of a 19th-century upright piano and had it hand-carved with detailed relief portraits for the shoot. The carvings took weeks to complete and serve as the film's most potent visual metaphor for living history.
In 1936 Pittsburgh, the Charles family is torn apart by the arrival of their piano, an antique heirloom carved with the faces of their enslaved ancestors. When Boy Willie arrives from Mississippi determined to sell the piano and buy land, his sister Berniece refuses to let the family's history be traded away for profit, setting off a simmering conflict that forces everyone to confront what they owe the dead.
Directed by Malcolm Washington in his feature debut, The Piano Lesson adapts August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play with a fiery ensemble led by John David Washington and Danielle Deadwyler. The film honors Wilson's dense, poetic language while opening the story up visually, finding new power in the silences and spirits that haunt the Charles household.
Arriving on Netflix with the weight of Wilson's legacy behind it, the film earned passionate reviews for Deadwyler's volcanic performance as Berniece and for the care with which it handles themes of Black ownership, memory, and the cost of moving forward.
