It is the first Star Wars film released in theaters since 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, and the first Star Wars movie shot entirely in California, a production that qualified for roughly $21.75 million in state film tax credits.
In a break from franchise tradition, it became the first Star Wars theatrical film to feature conventional opening credits rather than relying solely on the series' familiar title styling.
Director Jon Favreau shot approximately forty-nine minutes of the film in the large-format 1.43:1 IMAX aspect ratio, and the movie grew directly out of The Mandalorian, the series that helped launch Disney+ back in 2019.

Pedro Pascal returns as the taciturn bounty hunter Din Djarin, reunited with the Force-sensitive foundling Grogu after the events of the series. Working for the fragile New Republic, the pair are drawn into a perilous mission that pits them against Imperial remnants and a warlord's forces, fighting through gladiatorial arenas, crime syndicates, and ancient monsters. Sigourney Weaver joins the cast as a New Republic officer, with Jeremy Allen White among the voice cast and a cameo from filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
Released in May 2026, it drew mixed reviews, praised for its action sequences, score, and Pascal's presence but faulted for a thin story, and grossed around $346 million worldwide, a soft result by Star Wars standards. It began streaming on Disney+ on September 2, 2026.
