Rose Glass’s Second Feature — Love Lies Bleeding is only Rose Glass’s second feature film after Saint Maud (2019), and it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it immediately generated significant awards buzz.
Katy O’Brian’s Physical Transformation — O’Brian trained intensively for months to portray competitive bodybuilder Jackie convincingly, building visible muscle mass that the film’s camera treats with genuine awe.
Shot in New Mexico — The arid desert landscapes of New Mexico serve as both setting and mood board, with cinematographer Ben Fordesman capturing their alien beauty to amplify the film’s dreamlike quality.
A Genre-Bending Script — Co-written by Glass and Weronika Tofilska, the screenplay was described by Glass as “a love story wrapped in a crime thriller wrapped in a body-horror fantasy.”
Ed Harris Plays Against Type — Ed Harris plays Lou Sr., a menacing crime boss and gun range owner — a villainous turn that allows the typically heroic actor to explore genuinely dark territory.
A24 Distribution — The film was acquired and distributed by A24, the studio behind many of the most acclaimed arthouse genre films of the past decade, signaling strong faith in its crossover appeal.
Sundance 2024 Standout — Love Lies Bleeding screened in the Premieres section at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where critics immediately declared it one of the most exciting film debuts of the year.
A reclusive gym manager in a small New Mexican desert town falls for an ambitious bodybuilder passing through on her way to a competition in Las Vegas. Their intense romance quickly spirals into violence and crime when Jackie’s past and Lou’s dangerous family collide in ways neither anticipated.
British director Rose Glass follows up her debut Saint Maud with a film that defies easy categorization: part neo-noir, part body-horror, part love story, and part fever dream. Love Lies Bleeding wraps genuine human longing inside a plot of escalating menace, building toward sequences that embrace pure surrealist cinema while never losing sight of its characters’ raw vulnerability.
Kristen Stewart delivers one of her most physically and emotionally committed performances, while Katy O’Brian transforms herself convincingly into a competitive bodybuilder with dreams too big for the desert that surrounds her. Ed Harris and Dave Franco round out an ensemble that gives even the film’s most morally compromised characters their own warped internal logic.
