I Love You, Phillip Morris turns the real-life exploits of con artist Steven Russell into an unusually tender crime comedy. Jim Carrey plays Russell as both a fearless improviser and a man whose schemes repeatedly undermine the life he wants to build with fellow inmate Phillip Morris, played by Ewan McGregor.
The film balances increasingly elaborate escapes and impersonations with a relationship that gives those schemes an emotional cost. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa keep the tone quick and irreverent, while the contrast between Carrey’s restless performance and McGregor’s quieter warmth prevents the story from becoming only a catalogue of cons.
