Every Which Way but Loose is a 1978 American action-comedy film directed by James Fargo. The movie stars Clint Eastwood as Philo Beddoe, a truck driver and amateur bare-knuckle boxer who travels across the American West with his best friend, Orville, and his pet orangutan, Clyde. Along the way, Philo becomes involved in a series of brawls and romantic entanglements.
The film features an ensemble cast, including Sondra Locke, Geoffrey Lewis, and Beverly D'Angelo. It is known for its blend of action, humor, and drama, as well as its iconic theme song, "Every Which Way but Loose," performed by Eddie Rabbitt. Every Which Way but Loose also explores themes of masculinity, loyalty, and the search for meaning.
Every Which Way but Loose was a commercial success upon its release, and has since become a cult classic. The movie is praised for its entertaining performances, exciting fight scenes, and charming sense of humor. It has been compared to other buddy comedies, such as Smokey and the Bandit and Midnight Run, but is celebrated for its unique blend of genres and its unconventional protagonist. The film's success also spawned a sequel, Any Which Way You Can, released in 1980.
