Liu Cixin's original novel was first published in China in 2008 and became the first Asian novel to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2015 — a recognition that brought it to global attention and eventually to Netflix's adaptation pipeline, where Benioff and Weiss spent several years developing its notoriously complex scientific and philosophical framework for television.
The series' depiction of a virtual reality video game called Three Body — through which characters experience the civilization of the alien Trisolarans — required the production to design an entirely original alien civilization from scratch, including its mathematics, its physics, and its deeply alien relationship to time, seasons, and survival that forms the novel's conceptual core.
Netflix made the unusual decision to allow the showrunners to adapt the entire trilogy freely rather than committing to a direct adaptation of just the first novel — a choice that required Benioff, Weiss, and Woo to compress and reorder events from across all three books, giving the series a narrative architecture unlike any conventional adaptation of a beloved fantasy or science fiction property.

3 Body Problem was Netflix's most ambitious international genre series of 2024, praised for the scope of its production design and the ambition of its storytelling — particularly its willingness to engage with the novel's most challenging conceptual puzzles about physics, probability, and civilization. The VR sequences depicting the three-body simulation became some of the most discussed visual sequences on streaming that year. The series has been renewed for a second season. It streams exclusively on Netflix.
