Interesting Facts

The series is based on James L. Swanson's 2006 bestseller Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer, which spent 36 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and is considered one of the most authoritative popular histories of the assassination's aftermath, bringing granular detail to a story most Americans know only in outline.

Tobias Menzies researched Edwin Stanton by reading hundreds of his personal letters and official dispatches, discovering a man whose public severity masked deep reserves of grief — Stanton had lost his first wife to illness and never fully recovered, a dimension of the character the actor worked to keep present in every scene throughout the limited series run.

The production team reconstructed detailed period-accurate sets of 1865 Washington D.C., including Ford's Theatre and the Petersen House across the street where Lincoln died, consulting extensively with historians at the Ford's Theatre National Historic Site to ensure the environments reflected documentary evidence rather than theatrical convention or popular mythology.

Manhunt

description

Manhunt is Apple TV+'s gripping limited series dramatizing the seventeen-day hunt for John Wilkes Booth following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865. Based on James L. Swanson's bestselling historical account, the series centers on Edwin Stanton, Lincoln's formidable Secretary of War, played with fierce intelligence and moral urgency by Tobias Menzies. Stanton's determination to bring Booth to justice — and to protect the fragile future of the American republic in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War — drives a narrative that is equal parts thriller, historical drama, and character study of a man operating at the intersection of grief and duty.

The series devotes considerable attention to the political complexity surrounding Booth's act — his Confederate sympathies, his network of co-conspirators, and the forces within the federal government that either tolerated or actively enabled the conditions that made the assassination possible. Creator Monica Beletsky and director Carl Franklin bring the Reconstruction period to vivid, morally complicated life, presenting an America at a genuine crossroads whose outcome was never as inevitable as history makes it seem. Anthony Boyle plays the charismatic and chilling John Wilkes Booth with one of the most compelling portrayals of the infamous figure in any medium.

Manhunt premiered to widespread critical acclaim in March 2024, with particular praise directed at Menzies' performance and the series' willingness to frame the Lincoln assassination as the opening act of a sustained political conspiracy. The show earned Emmy nominations and renewed conversation about the Reconstruction era as one of American history's most consequential and underexplored chapters. It streams exclusively on Apple TV+.

The Chicago Code

Crime & Thriller
"The Chicago Code" has nothing to do with deep-dish pizzas or the cruelly cursed Cubbies. "The Chicago Code" openly, unabashedly, plain and simple, is all about good versus evil. The good guys following "The Chicago Code" are very very good, and the bad guys breaking the code are very very bad. The windy city itself, definitely a critical element in the drama's development, lives somewhere in-between. Chicago may be "the second city," but it stands out as America's number one oxymoron. "Hog-butcher to the world," Chicago also brought us Hemingway and Frank Lloyd Wright. Home to Picasso's breathtaking artistic monument, Chicago also has been home to some monumental con artists: Rod Blagojevich comes immediately to mind. "Blaggo" is to Chicago scams as the Picasso is to the city's art and architecture. More to the point of "The Chicago Code," in just over thirty years, thirty-one second city aldermen have been convicted of violent crimes or corruption. In Chicago, graft greases the wheels and gets your streets ploughed. Although corruption may be common as camel-hair coats on the Magnificent Mile, Chicago cops still want to collar the bad guys. "The Chicago Code" attempts to dramatize how and why they do it, and it packs a pretty good punch for a network production. Critics and home-grown Chicago viewers strongly suspect "The Chicago Code" would achieve its completely gritty potential on cable, but it's hard to complain about Jennifer Beals, still fit and fabulous all these years after Flashdance, going balls-to-the-wall against the bad guys in Monday night primetime.
