Patrick Gibson was selected from hundreds of actors who auditioned for the role of young Dexter, with producers specifically seeking someone who could honour Michael C. Hall's original performance without simply imitating it — a challenge Gibson met by focusing on Dexter's psychology and internal contradictions rather than attempting to reproduce the elder actor's mannerisms.
Michael C. Hall, who played the adult Dexter for eight seasons and in the revival New Blood, served as an executive producer on Original Sin and was heavily involved in creative decisions — particularly around how the prequel's depiction of young Dexter's development should align with the internal logic he had spent years building into the character across both runs of the show.
The series is set in 1991 Miami, requiring the production to meticulously recreate the city's distinctive aesthetic from that period, including period-accurate vehicles, clothing, technology, and cultural references that place the story precisely in the world of Miami before the crime wave the original series' adult Dexter clandestinely helped to address.

Dexter: Original Sin is the origin story that fans of Showtime's landmark crime drama had long demanded — a prequel series set in 1990s Miami that traces how Dexter Morgan first became the vigilante serial killer audiences spent eight seasons following. Patrick Gibson steps into Michael C. Hall's iconic role with remarkable assurance, capturing Dexter's dry wit, clinical detachment, and barely suppressed darkness in a performance that honours the original while establishing its own distinct identity. The series returns to the early days of Dexter's career at the Miami Metro Police Department, before he perfected the code his foster father Harry instilled in him, and when the dark passenger was something he was still learning to control.
Christian Slater plays Harry Morgan with the kind of weary, knowing authority the role demands, filling in the crucial backstory of how a police detective shaped his adopted son into a killer who only kills killers. The Miami setting is recreated with authentic period detail, and the show takes considerable pleasure in populating young Dexter's world with the kinds of formative experiences that explain the fully formed character audiences already know. The supporting cast includes familiar faces from the original series alongside new characters who immediately feel essential to the mythology.
Dexter: Original Sin arrived on Paramount+ in December 2024 and exceeded expectations on every front — critics who feared a cynical cash-grab found instead a thoughtful, well-crafted expansion of a world they had never fully left behind. The show earned a second season renewal almost immediately after its premiere, demonstrating that the Dexter universe still has untapped storytelling potential. It streams exclusively on Paramount+.
