Ballard is a spinoff of the long-running Bosch franchise, all drawn from the novels of Michael Connelly, and it centers Renee Ballard, a character Connelly created in his books partly to work alongside and eventually carry forward the world of his signature detective Harry Bosch.
Titus Welliver reprises his role as Harry Bosch in the series, linking the new show directly to the earlier Bosch and Bosch: Legacy and giving the shared universe continuity across platforms.
Maggie Q, an experienced action performer from projects like Nikita, took on the physically demanding lead, and the production emphasized the real-world texture of cold case police work, from overlooked evidence to the bureaucratic neglect that leaves such units perpetually under-resourced.
Ballard is a Prime Video crime procedural that expands Michael Connelly's popular Bosch television universe, spinning off the character of Detective Renee Ballard into her own series. Maggie Q stars as Ballard, a tenacious LAPD detective who is placed in charge of the department's under-resourced and understaffed cold case unit, tasked with reopening old murders that the rest of the force has forgotten. The series continues the grounded, procedural realism that made Bosch and its successor Bosch: Legacy long-running favorites.
Working out of a cramped basement with a team of volunteers and reserve officers, Ballard pursues a sprawling web of cold cases even as she navigates institutional resistance and a dangerous conspiracy inside the department itself. Maggie Q brings physical credibility and steely determination to the role, and the series folds in a connection to the wider Bosch world, including an appearance by Titus Welliver's Harry Bosch, rewarding longtime fans while standing on its own.
Premiering on Prime Video in July 2025, Ballard drew a strong audience and was quickly renewed for a second season, extending one of streaming's most durable crime franchises. Anchored by Maggie Q's commanding lead performance and Connelly's meticulous plotting, it streams on Prime Video.
