The Shawshank Redemption

Based on Stephen King's 1982 novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption," published in the anthology Different Seasons — a collection of King's non-horror work.

The film was a theatrical disappointment in 1994, grossing only ~$16 million against a $25 million budget, but repeated cable broadcasts made it one of the most-watched films of the late 1990s.

The Shawshank Redemption has held the #1 position on IMDb's Top 250 user-rated movies list for most of the past two decades, ahead of films with far larger budgets and marketing.

Director Frank Darabont turned down a lucrative studio offer to recast with Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise, insisting on keeping Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, whom he felt were perfect for the roles.

The famous escape scene required Tim Robbins to crawl through a 500-foot mock sewage tunnel multiple times — filled with cold water and a substance the crew diplomatically called "chocolate syrup."

Morgan Freeman recorded all of Red's narration in a single two-day session at the very end of production, after all footage was shot, giving the voiceover its genuine retrospective weight.

The Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio — the real-life filming location — has become a major tourist attraction and hosts paranormal investigation events, drawing thousands of visitors annually.
