Ne Zha 2 is a Chinese animated fantasy epic written and directed by the filmmaker known as Jiaozi, a sequel to his 2019 smash that reimagines figures from the classical novel Investiture of the Gods. A dazzling blend of mythological spectacle, slapstick humor, and genuine emotion, it became a cultural phenomenon on a scale rarely seen in animation anywhere in the world.
The story picks up after the young demon-child Ne Zha and the dragon prince Ao Bing have had their physical bodies destroyed, leaving their souls sharing a single fragile form. To restore themselves, the two former rivals must undergo a series of perilous trials set by the immortals, a quest that pulls them into a larger war between the heavenly order and the long-oppressed dragon clans. Beneath the breathless action lies the first film's defiant theme: that destiny is not fixed by birth, and that a being branded a monster can still choose who to become.
Released during the 2025 Chinese New Year, Ne Zha 2 shattered records to become the highest-grossing animated film in history and the highest-grossing film ever in a single market, climbing past two billion dollars worldwide and ranking among the top-grossing films of all time. A24 handled the English-language release in North America, where critics praised its astonishing visual craft. It is streaming on HBO Max.
